College of the Canyons is seeking a faculty leader in the area of Welding Technology. This is a 10-MONTH professional, full-time tenure track position beginning August, 2023. The position may include a combination of teaching, department, college, and community leadership functions. Assignment may include day, evening, and weekend duties at all District sites.
- Teaches a full load of courses in welding technology related theory and methods in both classroom and laboratory learning environments.
- Instructs students, evaluates and records student progress in attaining goals and objectives.
- Directs, markets, and coordinates outreach activities for the Welding program and manages student retention.
- Fosters student safety awareness, industry skills obtainment and program
- Promotes and maintains the AWS SENSE (American Welding Society Schools Excelling through National School Standards Education) entry-level curricula in all applicable welding courses.
- Promotes and maintains National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3) curricula in all applicable welding courses.
- Obtains industry credentials as required to support current and innovative programs offered in the Welding Technology department.
- Ensures compliance with accreditation standards of regional and national accrediting agencies.
- Ensures the safe operation during instruction of metal fabrication equipment such as: manual milling machines & lathes, pneumatic and hydraulic shears, tube bending machines, and CNC plasma cutting machines.
- Uses, with proficiency, precision and non-precision measuring tools and equipment.
- Interprets basic-to-complex drawings.
- Develops and revises appropriate credit and noncredit program and course curriculum in response to discipline and workforce needs.
- Maintains office hours and participates in department, division, and college committees and governance.
- Participates in and implements departmental and college program reviews.
- Participates in providing feedback to the department Business & Leadership Team (BLT).
- Participates in additional faculty responsibilities, including college decision-making activities related to professional and academic matters. The activities will occur within the department as well as in the larger College setting and at all district campuses.
- Engages in ongoing professional development and preparation related to best practices associated with pedagogy, andragogy, and all instructional (including virtual) teaching modalities to address anticipated student and instructional delivery needs.
- Assists with scheduling, evaluation, and mentoring of adjunct faculty.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Faculty members at College of the Canyons facilitate student learning by working to develop every student’s abilities and by designing varied and exciting learning environments.
- Faculty members work as team members with all staff, create innovations in teaching and learning methods, and work to provide an environment for students to be partners in learning.

Possession of a California Community College Instructor Credential in Welding Technology.
Bachelor’s degree or higher plus two years of full-time equivalent professional experience in engineering, manufacturing/ industrial technology, or closely related field, or the equivalent.
Associate degree plus six years of full-time equivalent of professional experience in engineering, manufacturing/ industrial technology or closely related field, or the equivalent.

Must be maintained throughout course of employment.
Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) Structural Steel Welder Certification – Manual and Semiautomatic processes.
Proof of current certification
Certification must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment from date of hire.
- Experience teaching conventional (manual) machine tool theory and operation (manual mills and lathes).
- Proficient in the theory and operation of conventional milling machines and engine lathes using Digital Read Out (DRO) systems.
- Possess and demonstrate competency in the programming and operation of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. Knowledge in preparing students for industry-specific credentials and certifications.
- Prior experience working to deliver measurable outcomes towards federal and or state fund grants.
- Expertise in additive manufacturing and welding/fabrication theory and methods.
- Experience with online/blended instructional delivery methods.
- Involvement serving on industry related advisory boards and/or committees.
- Participation in welding and metal fabrication industry professional organizations.
- Proficiency in the design, implementation, and maintenance of a career technical education laboratory.
- Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, including use of advanced technology required in the discipline.
- Experience with online teaching and pedagogy is desired.
- Strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued innovation and improvement of successful teaching.
- Ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of advanced technology utilized in providing high quality instruction and the understanding and successful use of learning technology.

Position will require extended periods presenting material in a classroom setting, and frequent periods of movement from one area to another, which may include traversing to different floors of a building. Requires use of a computer and related equipment; frequent exertion of 10-20 pounds of force to move objects; communicating and providing information to others; and travel from site-to-site. In the event of an emergency, employees will be relied upon to serve as emergency workers.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Ten-month position; anticipated starting date August, 2023 (start date not negotiable)
- Initial Salary Placement on Academic Salary Schedule C is dependent on education and experience. Salary range is from: $72,840 – $115,800 annually (adjusted for 12 months of pay per year). - Part of the teaching assignment may be evenings and/or weekends at all District sites.
- The instructor may be expected to deliver instruction utilizing nontraditional delivery methods.

Performance Welding Test (For Finalists Only):
Applicants will be required to perform the following tests:
- Complete a steel 3G 3/8” plate test using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).
- Complete a steel 3F ¼” plate test using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).
- Complete an aluminum 2G 1/8” sheet test using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).
NOTE: Applicant to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and sign a medical waiver prior to the testing.
