Assistant Teaching Professor of Rhetoric and Composition

Penn State Harrisburg's School of Humanities is accepting applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Rhetoric and Composition (Non-Tenure Line), to start in the Fall 2023 semester and be part of the faculty that provide general education and upper-division writing courses to a campus of 5,000 students.

The campus also offers minors in technical writing and general writing; a Bachelor of Humanities in English; and graduate degrees in Humanities, Communications, and American Studies.

The program seeks candidates with teaching experience in:
  • Rhetoric and composition.
  • Teaching assignments will include general education writing courses for first-year students (including Honors composition and also courses for English language learners) and 200-level general education writing courses intended for all majors.


Candidates may also be asked to teach other English, or Rhetoric and Composition courses as needed.

Candidates might also offer pedagogy courses to English/Secondary Education majors. Research areas may include rhetoric and composition, digital humanities, visual rhetoric, secondary education writing pedagogy, ESL and ELL, and interdisciplinary general education topics, such as the rhetoric of science or business and professional rhetoric.

Position Requirements:
  • Candidates must have higher education teaching experience in rhetoric and composition, and a terminal degree in rhetoric and composition or a related field. A doctoral degree in rhetoric or composition is preferred.


To be considered, candidates must electronically:
  • Submit a cover letter that includes a brief teaching philosophy, a curriculum vitae, and a list of at least three references.
  • References should be able to speak about the teaching effectiveness of the candidate.


ABDs may apply, but proof of a terminal degree by July 30, 2023 will be required for the candidate hired for the position.

Advising and mentoring experience is preferred but not required.

The position offers a two-year renewable contract with opportunities for advancement and longer contracts over time.

This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with the possibility of re-funding.
