The College of Arts and Sciences at Washington State University (WSU), at its Tri-Cities campus in Richland, WA, invites applications for a permanent, full-time, nine-month, career-track Assistant Professor position. This is primarily a teaching position focused on undergraduate introductory physics courses, both lecture and laboratory that are both algebra- and calculus-based. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2023.
At WSU, career-track teaching assistant professors are primarily engaged in teaching undergraduate courses, including laboratory classes as well as also engaging in service. The successful candidate will be expected to provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate level, mentor undergraduate students, and perform professional and university service commensurate with the scope of the appointment. Ideally, candidates will have a passion for teaching and enthusiasm for involving undergraduate students in research and project-based learning.
Summary of Duties:
Develop and teach undergraduate physics courses, particularly in introductory physics with the possibility to additionally teach mathematics courses
Contribute to advising and mentoring of undergraduate students
Participate in service to the department, college and/or university through committee work, recruitment, and assessment activities
Advance the college's commitment to diversity and multiculturalism among its faculty, staff, students through teaching and community outreach
Collaborate closely with other faculty and staff throughout WSU
Required Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in physics or a closely related field, prior to the hire date
Demonstrated experience or potential for teaching centered in best pedagogy practices
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts on campus and externally
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience teaching lecture and lab courses
Excellent communication abilities in written and verbal forms
Demonstrated ability to use novel teaching approaches which advance the pedagogy of physics
Demonstrated ability to direct undergraduate students in research projects
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the premiere academic units at WSU. Its 20 faculty and 55-70 graduate students engage in cutting edge research that attracts more than $2M/year in extramural funding. We have faculty affiliated with the Institute for Shock Physics in Pullman and the Applied Sciences Laboratory in Spokane. We also have ties to the Advanced Light Source (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), DOE/NNSA National Laboratories, the Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced
Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.
Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
