Duties and Responsibilities

Foothill college is seeking a dynamic, motivated, and collegial full-time English instructor with a strong commitment to the mission of California’s community colleges. The successful candidate will teach the core sequence of composition, critical reading, and critical thinking courses (and related support courses) and may teach courses in the instructor’s areas of expertise and/or interests: literature, creative writing, journalism, and/or technical writing. We invite applicants with experience and interest in elevating student voices on campus, including via student journalism. Teaching assignments will be primarily on-campus, with some online and hybrid, and faculty are expected to engage in professional contributions on the Foothill campus throughout the academic year.

The successful applicant will have credentials and experience in composition and reading theory, with an excitement for helping us meet the challenges and leverage the opportunities of a 21st century education in writing and literary studies. Faculty support student success through the application and understanding of materials, pedagogies, assessment methods, and feedback techniques that are effective with a diverse student population. A successful applicant will have a demonstrated interest in collaborating with faculty and staff to increase student success, persistence, and retention. Faculty responsibilities include evaluating existing departmental programs and courses and keeping current with research, pedagogies, and methodologies for teaching linguistically diverse students.

Standard duties expected of all full-time faculty include development, assessment, and revision of curricula and textbooks; program review; Student Learning Outcomes assessment; maintaining scheduled office hours; attending department/division meetings; pursuing professional growth activities; service on district and/or college committees; and working with other departments and community partners to improve student success. We seek faculty members who are themselves the life-long learners and independent thinkers we encourage our students to be. We are looking for educators with a shared sense of purpose and a demonstrated commitment to student success, who are creative and responsible in their use of time and resources, who possess a clear vision for creating a democratic learning environment, and who can translate that vision into practice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.Master’s in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism OR the equivalent

Knowledge and application of the major epistemological considerations informing the discipline of English, including relevant history and contexts of the field, contributing theories, and pedagogical approaches.

Experience and enthusiasm for teaching composition and reading, critical thinking, and literature (and related support courses) in a multicultural college or university setting.

Training and/or experience in equity-driven, culturally-responsive curriculum, course design, pedagogy, and assessment that engages diverse student populations and encourages student agency and metacognitive awareness.

Experience and/or interest in collaborating with colleagues to develop interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, such as Writing in the Disciplines/Writing Across the Curriculum

Experience with journalism, publications, and/or student voice projects.

Experience supporting the success of disproportionately impacted students through mentoring, club advising, and/or support of learning communities.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills applicable to the duties and challenges related to carrying out departmental and institutional responsibilities.

Knowledge of the California community college system and the populations it serves. 

Knowledge of and/or experience with and/or interest in: online pedagogy and instructional technology/learning management systems in asynchronous online/hybrid settings.

Strong leadership and communication skills

An attached supplemental document: Submit a writing assignment prompt for a student audience and appropriate for a freshman composition class (ENGL1A) and a brief (no more than one page) rationale for the assignment and what it demonstrates about your teaching philosophy

HIRING RANGE: $67,090.00 - $110,186.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant’s verified education and experience.
