Description:

The Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy (ISUP) at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Indigenous Epistemologies and Writing Studies in Higher Education. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter.

We seek a scholar with expertise in Indigenous Epistemologies and Writing Studies in Higher Education who has an established relationship with Indigenous communities in North America or beyond. Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous. Recognizing that there are a variety of terms that potential candidates may use to self-identify, the University uses the term “Indigenous” in this search, which forms part of the U of T response to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to encompass the people of Turtle Island, including those who identify as First Nations, Métis, Inuk (Inuit), Alaska Native, Native American, and Native Hawaiian people. This position will complement ongoing dedication and work with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation as Treaty Partners, and the Indigenous hiring initiatives made across a variety of academic and administrative units at UTM over the past 3 years, including 5 recent tenure stream positions in Sociology, Historical Studies, and Visual Studies / English and Drama, and a Director and 2 administrative positions in the Indigenous Initiatives Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office. The University of Toronto is home to approximately 800 Indigenous students from across Turtle Island. The University is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic faculty committed to research and teaching. UTM offers exciting opportunities for collaborative and interdisciplinary research and teaching, as well as for working with a diverse student population. UTM actively encourages innovative scholarship. The Greater Toronto Area offers great cultural and demographic diversity, including vibrant urban and rural Indigenous communities.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, and must have a record of excellence in research and teaching and demonstrated expertise in Indigenous epistemologies and writing studies. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop new courses related to Indigenous epistemologies, as well as teaching current writing studies courses such as Writing for University and Beyond.

Candidates will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices. The successful candidate will hold a graduate faculty appointment in the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of contributions and publications in top-ranked and relevant journals or forthcoming publications, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees.

Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in teaching through teaching accomplishments, a teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Toronto Mississauga has a modern and spacious campus with high-quality teaching spaces. The Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy was established in 2020 to promote the study of university pedagogy, especially the experiences of undergraduate students, through collaborative research, instruction, training, scholarship, and assessment. ISUP builds on the success of the UTM Teaching and Learning Collaboration (TLC) and the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC), and is home to the new Foundational Writing Skills Initiative and other writing programs previously administered by the RGASC, as well as new Foundational Numeracy Skills courses.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link below. Applicants must submit a cover letter that demonstrates their engagement with Indigenous communities; a current curriculum vitae; a research statement outlining current and future research interests; a recent writing sample; a statement describing contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion (see below); and a complete teaching dossier including a teaching statement, sample syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations.

At UTM we are committed to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion. With an enviable diverse student body, we especially welcome applications from candidates who identify as Indigenous, Black, or racially visible (persons of colour), and who have experience working with teaching or mentoring diverse groups or students. Candidates must demonstrate, in their application materials, an ability to foster diversity on campus and within the curriculum or discipline, and must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial environment. Candidates must submit a statement describing their contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities; efforts undertaken to develop inclusive pedagogies, collaboration, and engagement with underrepresented communities; and mentoring of students from underrepresented groups. If you have questions about this statement, please contact Ruth Childs, Director, Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy at isup.chairadmin@utoronto.ca.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. At least one reference must primarily address the candidate’s teaching. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each after an application is submitted (this happens overnight). Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that references submit letters (on letterhead, dates, and signed) by the closing date.

Submission guidelines can be found at http://uoft.me/how-to-apply. Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Ruth Childs, Director, Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy at isup.chairadmin@utoronto.ca.

All application materials, including reference letters, must be received by February 16th 2023.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
