Rank Renewable Term Assistant Professor of Engineering Mechanics

Description

The School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science (School) within the Gallogly College of Engineering (College) is seeking a candidate for a teaching-focused rank renewable term (RRT) appointment to enhance the education of undergraduate students in engineering mechanics. This person’s academic home will be in the School, but they will also be aligned with the Engineering Pathways Hub within the College by contributing to the education and mentoring mission for undergraduate students across the College.

The College is rapidly growing with a strategic focus on increasing the number of engineering graduates and increasing the research portfolio. The plan for student body growth is built around new programs that support and educate the student body in meaningful ways to recognize and encourage new ways of thinking, understand broad perspectives, and engage in relevant engineering experiences. The College is standing up a new Engineering Pathways Hub for teaching-focused faculty members who are passionate about teaching and mentoring students. These faculty will be instrumental in designing and implementing our student-centered plan for growth.

In parallel to the College’s goals, the School aims to improve the engineering mechanics curriculum by enhancing the materials and soil mechanics laboratory experiences and strengthening offerings in other undergraduate mechanics courses. The School is seeking a candidate who can take a leading role in these efforts as well as teach the new laboratory course. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to excel in teaching basic mechanics courses including statics, mechanics of materials, soil mechanics and fluid mechanics.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to excellent and innovative instruction, an ethos of care and support of students, effective mentorship and guidance of students, and a commitment to building collaboration in the classroom, office, and labs. Candidates with an interest in educational research are welcome and will have opportunities for research collaboration with current and new faculty.

The University of Oklahoma invests in its faculty by providing support and resources through our Center for Faculty Excellence (https://www.ou.edu/cfe) and Vice President for Research and Partnerships Office (https://www.ou.edu/research-norman). The College and School support faculty development through mentoring, new faculty orientation series, and access to research and educational support. Candidates seeking to work in a rapidly-growing School and College, in collegial interdisciplinary groups, and towards the mission of student success, are encouraged to apply.

The Gallogly College of Engineering seeks candidates who contribute to fostering a collaborative and welcoming environment in all aspects of faculty responsibility, including within the classroom, the academic community, and within their professional commitments. With more than 4000 total students, our undergraduate student body is outstanding with more than 200 National Merit Scholars and more than 400 Honors students currently enrolled.
