Organizational Unit Overview:

The Honors College (HC) and its programs are part of the Division of Academic Affairs. The Honors College provides outstanding undergraduate students with an enhanced and supportive intellectual and social environment that acculturates them to the life of the mind. HC programs help these outstanding students to become critical, independent thinkers who are active in the design and pursuit of their own education and prepared to lead successful and fulfilling professional, civic and personal lives.

To this end, the HC offers numerous opportunities incorporating service learning, leadership development, diversity awareness, study abroad, and undergraduate research. These opportunities encourage students to travel to state and national honor conventions to present papers or make presentations, an exclusive living/learning community, seminar-style classes with limited enrollment, and access to other curricular and co-curricular experiences.

In keeping with the core values of the Honors College, the HC strives to provide academically motivated students with the type of educational experience that grows successful and dynamic leaders in our state and in our nation.

Job Duties :

INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University.

The Dean of the HC will be responsible for providing vision and dynamic leadership for the Honors College at East Carolina University. The Dean will establish goals and strategic objectives for all aspects of the HC, supervise and coordinate the work of the college’s administration, plan and manage the budget, coordinate curricular development, ensure the efficacy of comprehensive data-collection systems, recruit faculty to teach HC courses and serve on committees, define Honors College admission standards, expand recruitment efforts and strengthen student retention, undertake fund-raising and alumni relations, and represent the HC on and off campus. The Dean will facilitate the development of new programs related to ECU’s strategic plan, work closely and collaboratively with other Deans and appropriate offices across campus, and execute other functions as directed by the Provost.

Minimum Education/Experience :

The successful candidate will have a terminal degree and a record of distinction in teaching and research sufficient for a tenured appointment at ECU. The position requires a commitment to excellence in Honors education and a clear vision of the role of an Honors College within a large public university. The successful candidate will have an inclusive, transparent, and collaborative leadership style and an ability to inspire and lead HC staff and faculty. The position requires administrative experience at the departmental level or higher; demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budget administration, and advancement/fundraising; a record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level; and an understanding of global and interdisciplinary approaches to Honors education.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Preference will be given to candidates with leadership experience in an Honors College, Honors Program, or other initiatives serving academically talented undergraduate students.
