The Cardiovascular and Pulmonary (CVP) research group in the Department of Medicine has a full time opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Dr.Irwin laboratory. The selected applicant will be working in the area of cardiopulmonary (CPB) bypass / and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which also includes treatment of Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Projects will include: (1) testing oxygenated microbubbles (OMBs) delivery via intraperitoneal / colon administration to increase end organ oxygenation and be used as a bridge to increase survival in ARDS patients needing to rapidly transition to ECMO / CPB; and (2) develop an animal model mimicking prolonged CPB surgeries and testing novel therapeutic bioengineered proteins to protected against hemoglobin induced toxicity from CPB-induced hemolysis. Specifically, the successful applicant will perform mechanistic and applied physiological studies related to survival and end organ injury in cardiac events / surgeries. This work will include: (1) measurements of O2 supply ,blood gases, and metabolism of red blood cells, local tissue, muscle, organs assessing oxygenation. Methods will also be used to assess noval OMB formulations, and to draw correlations with mass transfer properties and pharmacokinetics. Measurements of cardiac and pulmonary function as well as metabolomics, and histopathological analysis of lung, heart, kidney and liver to assess hemoglobin / iron toxicity in end organs after prolonged CPB surgeries.

This is a collaborative research group the fosters team science and collaboration. Dr. Irwin works closely with the groups of Dr. Mark Borden of the University of Colorado Boulder and Dr. Paul Buehler at University of Maryland, Baltimore, Dr. Andre Palmer at The Ohio State University, and Dr. Pedro Cabrales at the University of California Sandiego. Combining the strengths of these labs by employing bioengineering of OMB and hemoglobin and heme scavenger proteins, physiological, molecular and translational approaches. Current projects include pulmonary and systemic administration of single and dual function scavenger proteins to rodent models of genetically aquired (sickle cell disease) and CPB pump- induced hemolysis, and how iron overloading in the macrophage alters the development and progression of PH in sickle cell anemia patients.

Supervision received:

The successful candidate will report directly Dr. David Irwin, but will also be mentored by Dr. Mark Borden (PI on the OMB project), who has a separate established lab on the University of Colorado, Boulder Campus. In addition, there will be interaction with Drs. Buehler,Palmer and Cabrales.

Supervision Exercised: None

Examples of work performed:
Perform experiments using advanced biomedical research techniques and develop new methods/applications. Trouble-shoot and problem-solve as related to the research project Travel to Boulder Campus as necessary to coordinate OMB preparation with studies to be conducted in Dr. Irwin Lab. Record results of experiments: tabulate research data and maintain a detailed, easily understandable laboratory notebook Interpret experimental results Collaborate with PI and others in the lab as well as other laboratories involved in team science Conduct literature searches Modify, test, verify and analyze research data Present results at lab meetings Present results at project meetings such as research in progress Present results at (inter)national meeting Write and publish manuscripts describing results Prepare grant applications, as necessary Perform all research compliance activities required by the University of Colorado Denver Other related duties as assigned by PI

Salary Range:

The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $53,760 to $65,292.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
