Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work

An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Francisco J. Asturias, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The Asturias group works on cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and biochemical studies of macromolecular complexes involved in various essential cellular processes. This project, part of a dynamic and very productive collaboration with the group of Mamuka Kvaratskhelia (also at Anschutz), is focused on understanding the structure of HIV-1 capsid protein (CA) assemblies in interaction with capsid inhibitors and cellular factors essential in the HIV infection cycle. Studies will primarily use cryo-EM and cutting-edge image analysis approaches. Postdoctoral Fellows with background in structural biology (especially cryo-EM or X-ray crystallography) would be particularly well qualified. This position reports directly to Dr. Asturias. The applicant will receive training and acquire expertise in all aspects of cryo-EM analysis of helical CA arrays, including sample preparation, automated data collection, image analysis and map calculation, and structure interpretation.

The person in this position must be highly motivated and well-organized, and capable of working both independently and as a member of a research team. They will be expected to interact and collaborate with other members of the Asturias and Kvaratskhelia labs. Good troubleshooting skills and ability to interpret, organize, and communicate experimental data are a must.
