The CU Denver Office of Research Services (ORS) seeks outstanding applicants for an Assistant Director for Research Development.

Aligned with the CU Denver 2030 Strategic Plan, the Assistant Director for Research Development will join a diverse and collaborative team expanding the environment which supports faculty and staff seeking external funding for their research and creative activities. This position serves in a strategic role in conjunction with multiple units across the research enterprise to build capacity and enable impactful faculty scholarship. In particular, the Assistant Director for Research Development will advise and act on behalf of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research as they lead the development, management, and successful submission of large, multidisciplinary grant proposals.

Responsibilities include providing input and direction in developing and implementing the University's strategic plan objectives in relation to research and creative works, identifying grant opportunities aligned with strategic research focus areas, interpreting program guidelines, communicating with sponsors, proposal project management, evaluating project scope of work, developing proposal budgets, writing non-technical proposal components, editing and formatting proposal documents, and assuring compliance with applicable federal, state, fiscal, and programmatic requirements. This position will oversee student and/or staff personnel and require highly developed knowledge, expertise and project management skills for proposal development support for complex proposals.

Examples of Work Performed:
  • Provide ORS and Campus leadership feedback to refine strategic research objectives.
  • Identify and promote strategic funding opportunities and assist with recruiting investigator teams based on knowledge of faculty expertise to pursue large multidisciplinary grant proposals and projects.
  • Represent the AVCR in Denver Campus research and creative works initiatives.
  • Network and build relationships with faculty and across the University research enterprise to ensure effective communication and interaction with the ORS.
  • Continually update knowledge of federal and non-federal agency interests and requirements to inform the institution's externally sponsored funding strategy.
  • Supports faculty by reading, analyzing, and organizing the response to requests for proposals, requests for information, broad agency announcements, and other funding opportunity announcements.
  • Oversee the management of complex proposal development efforts, including but not limited to: organizing proposal team meetings; creating and managing virtual shared workspaces; developing and adhering to proposal development schedules; and monitoring proposal development performance.
  • Lead budget development, budget justification narrative, and coordinating cost-share requirements for project proposals.
  • Develop institutional templates for common proposal components.
  • Assist with and develop the partnerships necessary to address the writing of non-technical proposal components (e.g., diversity and inclusion, education and outreach, management, data management, facilities, etc.).
  • Provide comprehensive editorial review on proposals.
  • Serve as a liaison between investigators, administrators, partners, agency officials, and other CU Denver research staff and offices.
  • Build and advise on best practices for research and creative activities development.
  • Facilitate working groups in emerging interdisciplinary research initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Five (5) or more years of related experience working with relevant extramural grants and contracts, to include at least 2 years of related proposal development experience with extramural grants and contracts.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 7 years of directly related experience in research development, business development, proposal development, project management, research administration, or a closely related field
  • Experience with managing, developing, editing, reviewing, and use of online tools that facilitate multi-investigator or multi-institution grant applications.
  • Experience with federal grants websites and award databases.

  • Superior oral and written communication skills which demonstrate the ability to effectively convey and explain information, influence outcomes and tactfully deal with diverse people, situations and ideas

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion with sensitive information.
  • Requires flexibility and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize among diverse responsibilities.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range/salary for this position has been established at $72,982 - $100,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.
