Overview

About UMass Chan Medical School:

UMass Chan Medical School and its clinical partner, University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center, is a thriving academic health care system located in Worcester MA, about an hour’s drive west of Boston. The environment provides a highly supportive home for fellows, with opportunities to collaborate with leading researchers and engage in meaningful clinical work.

As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, UMMS recognizes the power of a diverse community and encourages applications from individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.

About The Program in Microbiome Dynamics (PMD):

The Program in Microbiome Dynamics was established in 2020 as an institutionally supported program within the Department of Microbiology and Physiological Systems (MaPS). The mission of this program is to unify investigators who are taking the next critical step in the microbiome sciences. Critically, this step involves hypothesis-driven approaches that isolate components of the microbiota associated with disease phenotypes of interest and evaluates cause and effect between changes in the microbiome and development of disease. In parallel, the Program will also leverage the diverse computational platforms that currently exist within the UMMS system. These platforms allow the Program to develop innovative methods and technologies to improve how data are collected and analyzed, ultimately leading to new scientific discoveries and therapeutic advancement in patient care. Programmatically, the PMD integrates mathematical modeling from early stage planning all the way through to pre-clinical investigations in animal model systems into both basic and clinical research projects. The PMD consists of diverse community and network of researchers, computer engineers, systems biologists, scientists, and clinicians with a common interest in microbiome research. To date, the PMD consists of 5 full time tenure-track faculty members along with a full-service state-of-the-art infrastructure to support all aspects of the microbiome enterprise that are available to the institution at large.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis

Jumpstart your professional career in microbiome sciences by focusing on the microbiome-gut-brain axis with national innovators at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. This post-doctoral fellowship focuses on integrating clinical and basic microbiology with neurosciences, immunology, animal medicine, computational biology and applied mathematics. This fellowship uniquely focused on translational medicine where observations from human studies are brought into the lab and studied in model systems with the goal of better understanding of how microbial dysbiosis affects neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. The ultimate goals are development of medical microbiome therapeutics that can be brough back to the patient. Fellows will work on existing NIH-funded clinical and translational studies and help with grant submissions. Fellows will also work on the development of novel dynamical systems modeling and deep learning methods to predict the dynamics of the microbiome and how they impact host biology. Applications of these methods will include forecasting microbial population and metabolite dynamics that are constrained on longitudinal data from human clinical trials, predicting interactions with the host immune system, and using the models to perform combinatorial analysis to identify microbial combinations and functions maximizing host phenotypes of interest. Current active research includes CDC, DOD, NIA, NIAID, NIDDK, and foundational funded projects. Fellows will primarily work primarily with John P. Haran, MD, PhD https://www.umassmed.edu/haranresearchgroup/ and Vanni Bucci PhD https://vannibucci.wordpress.com/about/ . This combination of mentorship will allow applicants a diverse training to jumpstart a career in this exciting and rapidly advancing field.

Opportunities with other UMass faculty, include Beth McCormick, PhD

https://www.umassmed.edu/mccormicklab/ , Paul Greer https://greer-lab.com , other PMD members https://www.umassmed.edu/pmd/ and others are also available based on career aspirations of the fellow. Applicants with strong methodological, statistical, and computational experience are desirable.
