Associate Dean, Campus Life & Director of Athletics

The Associate Dean for Campus Life & Director of Athletics reports to the VP/Dean for Campus Life and sets the strategic direction for the department in the context of Emerson College's mission and values. Emphasizing education and continuous learning, the Director provides leadership, supervision, and motivation for department staff as they support the needs of the 14 teams and broader athletic community. The Director establishes a vision and standards of quantifiable excellence in the areas of intercollegiate athletics. In addition, the Director formulates, implements, and guides department-level policy and provides for the administration and financial management of the department and all its related programs and services. The Director effectively develops and communicates the department's mission, vision, and goals and develops successful plans and proposals for senior administration on behalf of the department and its strategic initiatives that also reflect the mission and vision of the Division of Student Affairs.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Management
  • Provide leadership and direction of the college's intercollegiate athletic programs with a broad emphasis on leadership and learning.
  • Provide department management and assign all department administrative responsibilities.
  • Provide supervision, development, and evaluation of department members.
  • Ensure staffing needs and professional excellence through effective hiring and management practices.
  • Mediate issues and resolve conflict in and among competing programs and resources.
  • Be a visible and accessible champion and advocate for the scholar-athlete experience. Work with senior leaders and serve on academic, department and college committees to enhance and sustain a culture of academic and competitive excellence leading to sustained scholar athlete engagement with intercollegiate athletics.
  • Encourage and promote a diverse and inclusive community among all students, faculty and staff. Partner with the Office of Equal Opportunity to instill a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences within the department.


Student Athlete Recruitment and Welfare
  • Coordinate and manage the recruitment of student-athletes. Oversee coaches' recruitment efforts
  • Work collaboratively with coaches, the athletics administrative leadership team, and the office of admissions on the strategic recruitment of scholar athletes. Partner with Admissions to enroll qualified student-athletes.
  • In coordination with the athletic training staff and college health services ensure the health and safety of student-athletes.
  • Work closely with student government leaders, recreational student leaders, and intercollegiate student-athletes, consulting with them regularly to ensure that institution's programs and services offered meet the needs of the various constituencies, particularly student users.
  • Provide leadership and support necessary for the continual development of a wellness, recreation, and alcohol education model.


Fiscal Responsibility
  • Demonstrate strong leadership of the department's programs and services; provide effective and strategic resource management and utilization of facilities; administer and monitor the department's capital budget, operations, and budgets.
  • Develop and foster alumni relationships and establish department's proposals and strategic priorities for fundraising in collaboration with the Alumni Engagement and Intuitional Advancement, including leadership giving and capital gifts.
  • Prepare, administer, and manage the department budget.


Compliance
  • Oversee all compliance processes for all varsity programs, coordinating all areas required to abide by NCAA, NEWMAC, and GNAC rules and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure the completion of operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies.
  • Represent the college and the department at conference and NCAA meetings.
  • Maintain institution's relationship with NCAA and NEWMAC and other respective sport conferences to ensure compliance with the procedures, rules, and regulations of those organizations.
  • Keep well informed of regulatory changes and ensure compliance with requirements by reviewing all relevant documents and determining impact of changes on programs.
  • Partner with Office of Equal Opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to Title IX compliance.
  • Implement all NCAA guidelines and regulations.
  • Establish and administer policies, procedures, and related protocols in accordance with state, federal and organizational guidelines.


Facility Management
  • Provide direction for comprehensive scheduling of all athletic facilities and the coordination of a master athletic calendar, in conjunction with the master college calendar.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for the maintenance, construction and restoration of the athletics and recreational facilities with designs for future facility needs.
  • Provide athletic facilities and equipment that are safe for community members.


External Relations
  • Provide leadership and coordination of external relations to alumni, parents and community organizations as they relate to the athletic program.
  • Direct event scheduling and management of community and public relations on behalf of the department.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS - Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform job.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Sports Management, or a related field required. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Eight to ten years of experience in university or college sports programs or a related field required, five years of which must be in a leadership and supervisory capacity with specific professional contributions to the field.
  • Eight to ten years of progressive experience preferred in a combination of athletic administration, teaching experience in physical education and athletics, coaching, student athlete recruitment, and recreation and lifetime sports.
  • Evidence of effective administrative leadership, budgetary ability and staff supervision required.
  • Substantial experience in developing and implementing athletics department budgets and a track record of success in working with all financial aspects and management of athletics related facilities and services.
  • Experience leading a mission-driven organization and effectively managing resources
  • Skilled in leading change and building a compelling case for what is needed.
  • Demonstrated success in the area of staff motivation and empowerment in supporting the achievement of excellence is essential. Experience in successfully leading others who are responsible for program and service deliverables.
  • Significant experience in recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and professionally developing coaches and staff members.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences. Continue to enhance a caring and supportive culture within the department.
  • A collaborative management approach with relationship-building skills, experience building a team, and leading and/or supporting the work of others.
  • Valid driver's license required


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job.
  • Knowledge of all rules and regulations pertaining to college varsity sports teams, and the ability to monitor and maintain compliance
  • Ability to create, maintain, and manage a budget
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement and enforce College, NCAA ND NEWMAC rules and regulations.
  • Prior experience in fundraising and public relations preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate and engage well with a diverse campus population, and a high degree of cultural competence.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience leading a program in a mission-driven institution
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to deliver information in a concise, and articulate manner to multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Proficiency in using computer software and the ability to learn new computer software easily
  • Ability to maintain multiple projects simultaneously and to prioritize tasks
  • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to navigate a schedule that includes frequent evenings, weekends and some travel.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in working with a wide variety of constituencies including students, parents, faculty/staff and alumni.
  • Proven management skills, particularly as they relate to establishing and communicating priorities, advancing innovative practices, building strategic partnerships, and solving problems.
  • Proven success at developing and delivering compelling plans and proposals to a senior audience is critical.
  • The ability to partner with the Development Office to network and develop relationships with alums, student-athletes, and their families to identify and cultivate development.

  • This position is generally sedentary in nature, movement throughout the area is required from time to time.
  • Ability to have continuous oral and written communication with co-workers and supervisors is essential.
  • Repetitive movements, occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds, reaching, lifting, stooping and the ability to read a computer screen, detect color-coding and read fine print will be expected.


WORK ENVIRONMENT - Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
  • General office conditions. Exposed to moderate noise levels
  • May occasionally be exposed to inclement weather and extreme temperatures

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25
