Description:

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a one-year appointment. The anticipated start date is 15 Jan 2023. The Aspuru-Guzik group (https://matter.toronto.edu) focuses on the theory, modelling, and AI-guided experimentation to accelerate the discovery of key materials for sustainability. The Candidate will work with a team of experimentalists to develop a self-driving lab that discovers new classes of molecules for energy storage applications, such as redox flow batteries. The components of the research includes: (1) developing customized hardware and writing Python software packages for the self-driving lab; (2) leveraging these tools to synthesize and characterize large quantities of candidate molecules; (3) calibrating theoretical models with experimental data, and predicting promising candidates with DFT tools and machine learning algorithms; and (4) elucidate structure-property relationships of emerging materials for application in redox flow batteries.Link to the lab: https://matter.toronto.edu
Duties: The candidate will be responsible for the conceptualization, execution, communication, and dissemination of research in service of the research projects described above and as directed by Prof. Aspuru-Guzik. The successful candidate is required to participate in
• Reading published papers relevant to the research being performed and adapting procedures accordingly.
• Liaising with collaborators and assisting in the compilation, analysis and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the group.
• Preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals.
• Presenting findings at local, national and international conferences.
• Assisting with the submission of research proposals to granting agencies, progress reporting, and participating in research supervision of two or more students or other trainees. At all times, the individual will be expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of the Aspuru-Guzik group. Experience conducting research independently by producing single-author publications.
Experience presenting research, as evidenced through invited seminars.
Experience organizing scientific workshops/conferences.
Supervising students in research. Skills:Must be able to work on research independently.
Strong in communicating effectively and efficiently in oral and written English
Collegial in working with team members and collaborators. Other:Must have a strong publication record
Strong demonstrated success in writing and preparing manuscripts, presentations, reports, briefs, and scientific abstracts and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
