Departmental Overview

The Division offers programs and services that support Berkeley students, faculty, and staff in teaching, learning, and discovery. The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education collaborates with campus partners to formulate and implement campus strategy around undergraduate education and the student experience.

This new position in the immediate office of the Vice Provost Division for Undergraduate Education (UE) leads the strategy, design and implementation of communications for the division. The position involves developing, implementing and executing comprehensive, multidisciplinary communications programs involving work in multiple communications disciplines including content creation, design, digital work, and more. The Director of Communications will independently oversee and execute a comprehensive communications program for the Division of Undergraduate Education. This position utilizes a wide variety of communications media, including emails, websites, social media, and print collateral and associated technical applications including MailChimp and a custom email platform, Open Berkeley website content management system, social media monitoring and scheduling software, and the Adobe suite. Works with the Vice Provost and Chief of Staff/AVC to develop and execute organizational communication and branding strategy for a highly visible Division on campus. The position reports to Assistant Vice Provost/Chief of Staff for Undergraduate Education and provides executive communications support for the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and the AVC/Chief of Staff.

Responsibilities
  • Manages complex comprehensive communications needs for the Division of Undergraduate Education. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Develops and coordinates strategic messaging from the Vice Provost, Immediate Office
    • Manages messaging requests from the Division and external units
    • Serves as lead sender of email messages (using custom email system CALmessages) for the Division Drafts copy to be used in a variety of venues for a variety of audiences
  • Oversees digital and print needs for the Division. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Edits and continuously improves content on the UE and Discovery websites
    • Develops and produces print collateral and digital assets for UE and Discovery
    • Manages Discovery social media presence
    • Manages relationships with freelancers/consultants/vendors
    • Supervise a team of work-study students on website, design and social media projects
  • Works with VPUE, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans. Serves as a communications resource and provides expertise to UE units and staff. Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.
  • Essential Proactively seeks out ways to celebrate and feature the mission of the Division, stories of undergraduate students at Berkeley, the work of UE units and the components of the Discovery Initiative. Develops and builds the UE and Discovery brands and associated materials (brand guidelines, etc.) to position UE and Discovery strategically within the University brand.
  • Fosters relationships with other communicators within the Division and across the University (e.g. Student Affairs, Equity & Inclusion, Public Affairs, etc.) and coordinates with them on joint messaging and projects. Represents UE on communications committees across campus.
  • Other duties as needed

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of communications approaches and strategy, including various technical aspects and requirements, and potential applications.
  • Editing experience with website content management system (i.e., Drupal, WordPress, Open Berkeley), skilled in social media strategy and execution, functional knowledge of design software (i.e., Adobe suite).
  • Demonstrated ability to create, develop and implement complex and comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans, strategies, and campaigns.
  • Experience providing executive level communications support including development of Division-wide and campus-wide communications (or equivalent), talking points and presentations.
  • Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Ability to multitask, manage time-sensitive deadlines and requests, handle competing interests
  • Flexibility in the face of rapid change.
  • Exceptional work ethic and ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary range of the position is $95,000.00-$110,000.00 commensurate with experience.
