facilitating an integrated vision and shared responsibility for prioritizing and advancing

institutional goals. We aim to foster an affirming campus culture based on the core values of

excellence, equity, diversity, belonging and inclusion through:

● Recruiting and retaining faculty and staff who are reflective of the diverse student body and communities served by SDSU, and recruiting students who are representative of the rich diversity of the region and the world;

faculty, staff and alumni of all backgrounds;

● Enhancing the career and educational pathways of a diverse student body, the faculty

and staff; and

● Cultivating relationships with the local community that advance the well-being of

diverse individuals and communities.

Position upholds the Student Affairs and Campus Diversity Statement on Diversity, Equity, and

Inclusion, specifically:

“The Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity acknowledges and honors the inherent value and dignity of all individuals by creating and nurturing a learning and working environment that affirms and leverages our community's diversity of traditions, heritages, perspectives, and experiences. We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusive excellence designed to facilitate the personal and professional success, growth, development, and wellbeing of all members of our community. We manifest this commitment through our innovative, strategic and collaborative efforts to develop leaders who believe in and lead others toward practicing civility, mutual respect, and inclusion in our workplaces and society.”

San Diego State University is seeking an energetic and dedicated professional to serve as the

Assistant Ombudsman within the division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. Under the

direction of the Student Ombudsman, the Assistant Student Ombudsman performs complex

Student Services professional work characterized by student advisement and guidance in

individual and group settings. The assignments require the applications of a high degree of

judgment, persuasiveness, imagination and professional skills and knowledge. The Assistant

Student Ombudsman must engage in considerable administrative planning to develop creative

solutions, which integrate approaches across organizational lines, and must recognize specific

program needs and develop approaches for possible implementation to meet these needs.

The Assistant Student Ombudsman's work assignments may be complex and/or sensitive, and

involve multifaceted concerns of individual students, student organizations, administration,

faculty, community groups and appropriate committees.

The purpose of the personal contact with students, faculty and representatives of the outside

community is to provide or obtain information on problems of a potentially controversial

nature, necessitating explanation and interpretation of facts. A considerable degree of tact and

persuasiveness is required to achieve the desired results of understanding and /or cooperation.

The Assistant Student Ombudsman must be sensitive to the needs of the individuals and of the

groups contacted and must also have keen insight and a sound understanding of some of the

cause and effect relationships that exist at the campus.

The Assistant Student Ombudsman performs in-depth analysis of individual student or group

problems of considerable complexity. Situations are analyzed thoroughly in search of sound

solutions rather than being quickly conceived utilizing standard techniques and devices. The

Assistant Student Ombudsman must be able to readily identify problems and alternative

solutions available without assistance from guidelines and formulas.
