JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut is currently seeking an entry-level Histotechnologist for the Histology Laboratory at the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (CVMDL), Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science, College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resource. The Histology Technician is responsible for embedding of tissues, routine, and special slide staining, immunohistochemistry staining, slide cover-slipping, microtomy, slide quality control, and tissue/block/slide inventory, etc. This position will support the service activities of the Histology Laboratory.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include but are not limited to:

  • Process animal tissue in preparation for microscopic evaluation.
  • Properly orient tissue and embed in paraffin.
  • Section and mount tissue onto microscope slide.
  • Prepare stains and reagent needed for various routine and special stain procedures.
  • Perform manual cover slipping.
  • Maintain control tissue block and slide inventory.
  • Perform various immunohistochemical staining.
  • Operate and maintain manual and automated instruments according to written procedures; identify instrument/equipment problems; assist with routine maintenance and equipment inventory.
  • Recognize testing errors/discrepancies or problems and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Ensure work and necessary tasks required are completed appropriately within the prescribed turnaround time.
  • Record, transcribe, and maintain records of histology tests in the Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Review accuracy and completeness of results prior to releasing.
  • Perform quality control procedures established according to written procedures and adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and regulations.
  • Assist with supervision of undergraduate student employees and independent study students within the Histology laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Associate degree in medical technology, chemistry, biology, or related life science and two (2) years of applicable experience OR completion of a formal educational training program in Histology (720 hours) that is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) and two (2) years of applicable experience.
  2. HT or HTL eligible. Must obtain HT/HTL certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 8 months of hire.
  3. Demonstrated ability to adhere to strict safety protocols including the donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Certified HT or HTL.
  2. Demonstrated Immunohistochemistry staining experience.
  3. Experience with digital slide scanning technology.
  4. Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), CLIA, AAVLD, or ISO in support of non-clinical studies.
  5. Knowledge in Excel, Word, Access, and SharePoint.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month position located at the Storrs campus. Salary of position will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s background and experience. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
