Job Overview

The School of Education at the University of Cincinnati is seeking applications for the position of School Director and Professor/Associate Professor, with the appointment beginning July 1, 2023. The start date is negotiable.

Ranked among the nation's top graduate schools of education, the School of Education is the home of teacher licensure, undergraduate, and graduate programs in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH). The largest of four schools in the college, the School of Education contains more than 50 full-time faculty members and serves approximately 1600 undergraduate and 700 graduate students in classrooms both on campus and online. The School of Education offers a wide range of program and degree options, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Within the School are premier education research centers, the largest of which is the Arlitt Center for Education, Research, and Sustainability.

Essential Functions

The School Director is the academic unit head for the School of Education. The unit head serves by empowerment of the Faculty and designation by the Dean to represent the faculty and college administration— each to the other—and to the University and Community. Responsibilities include:

  • Leadership in the development of the academic unit’s mission within the academic mission of the college.
  • Leadership and advocacy of its academic programs in the pursuit of educational excellence.
  • Leadership in promoting the selection and retention of an outstanding and diversified Faculty and Staff.
  • Leadership in the promotion of Faculty development that includes the provision of adequate resources for colleagues’ professional growth and annual performance reviews of Faculty.
  • Leadership in academic governance, especially the collaborative development of appropriate procedures for shared governance within the academic unit.
  • Leadership in promoting a climate where both the spirit and letter of affirmative action prevail.
  • Involvement in personal professional development and scholarship, including developing necessary administrative skills and knowledge.
  • Management and oversight of the Academic Unit’s budget, class schedules, course offerings, staff, and faculty workload, including teaching and service assignments.
  • Implementation of appropriate training and provisions of the UC/AAUP agreement, University Rules, and College bylaws.
Minimum Requirements
  • Must have obtained a Doctorate degree from a regionally accredited college or university of recognized standing in Education.
  • Must have scholarship commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor (2 or more years in rank) at the CECH School of Education and documented sustained record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service over an extended period of time.

    • Direct a large and diverse academic unit.
    • Effectively collaborate with the Dean, other School Directors, Program Coordinators, Faculty, Staff, Students, and Community leaders to advance the School, College, and University missions.
    • Foster and develop a strong culture of support for faculty and staff to grow academic programs, lead faculty and staff to grow academic programs, research activities, and research translation through various centers.
    • Work with regional, national, and international community partners to expand the Schools’ reach and influence in the education community.
    • Manage a large and complex budget and work collaboratively with the Dean to enhance the School’s contribution to a budget model based on enrollment growth.
    • Promote and recognize scholarship and grant activities.
    • Promote undergraduate and graduate programs’ distinctions.
    • Support educator licensure programs in meeting requirements of national accreditation and state approval.
  • Values diverse methodologies and multidisciplinary perspectives.
  • Has strong communication and interpersonal skills.
