Teaching Assistant Professor – School of Earth, Society and Environment

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The School of Earth, Society, and Environment in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for Teaching Assistant Professor who will teach undergraduate courses (2 courses per semester) needed for the Earth, Society and Environmental Sustainability (ESES) major, and provide academic support to students in the major (especially undergraduate academic advising).  Renewal of the position is contingent on availability of funding, positive performance reviews and sufficient course enrollments.

ESES students engage with environmental sustainability from a range of academic perspectives that encompass the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The School highly values experiential learning (which includes internships, fieldwork, and research) and personal, individualized academic advising. The School strives to be a welcoming place for all the members of our academic community, and it works to support faculty so that they can develop in their individual careers.

 Duties & Responsibilities

Undergraduate Instruction – two courses a semester, may be in-person or online, as needed. SESE faculty perform effective, rigorous, and innovative teaching. SESE instructors are respected across campus for their good judgment, subject mastery, and engagement with student needs.

Undergraduate Academic Advising – consisting of formal academic advising, primarily via taking in-person or virtual appointments with students, and by engaging in email/written communication with students. This duty includes some associated administrative and professional development activities. The total commitment averages around one and a half days per week (balancing higher loads in busy periods with lower loads at other times). SESE advisors are sought out by students for providing them with accurate, timely and considerate academic advice.

Program and Professional Development – this position will be expected to make contributions in service, research, and outreach, and in the development of the direction of the ESES major. Program development includes course development as well as program administration, activities, enhancements, outreach and publicity. Professional development can be via appropriate scholarship (either in their discipline or in pedagogy), public writing, community building, skill development or other scholarly activities. SESE faculty have an impressive history of course development, published scholarship, grant procurement, student research supervision, and popular writing that has furthered themselves, their fields, the institution, and society.
