The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB)  at Tulane University invites applications for an Ichthyologist to serve as a faculty member at the rank of associate or full professor and as Director of the Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute (TUBRI) and Curator of the Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection. We welcome applicants working in any area of ichthyology including ecology, evolution, genetics, systematics, biogeography, conservation, among others, with experience curating collections. The successful candidate will have office and laboratory space on Tulane’s main campus as well as facilities at TUBRI suitable for diverse research areas on the biology of fishes.  The successful candidate will receive a competitive start-up package and will be expected to maintain an active, externally funded research program, teach one course per semester in Ichthyology, Vertebrate Morphology and other areas of specialty, and train students at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Tulane’s EEB department faculty comprises 14 faculty (10 tenure-track faculty and four professors of practice , https://sse.tulane.edu/eebio/faculty) with a strong commitment to EDI. Research interests in the department emphasize solution-based science in ecology and evolutionary biology focused in the tropics and subtropical river-coastal ecosystems. EEB faculty are active participants in nationally and internationally recognized programs, such as the Organization for Tropical Studies, the ByWater Institute, the Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning, the Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking, and Tulane’s Center for Public Service, which manages Tulane’s two-tiers community service requirement for all undergraduates. Tulane University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, a select group of the 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada with ‘preeminent programs of graduate and professional education and scholarly research.' Tulane is located in the historic City of New Orleans, which is recognized globally for its culture, food and music.

The Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute (TUBRI) is a research center of the Tulane School of Science and Engineering established in 2011.  TUBRI is located on the grounds of the F. Edward Hebert Research Center in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, 16 miles from Tulane’s uptown campus (http://www.tubri.org). TUBRI has four permanent staff members, including the current director/curator of the fish collection , a collection manager, curatorial assistants and technology specialists. TUBRI specializes in research on biodiversity discovery (primarily involving fishes) and biodiversity informatics technology development projects (http://www.tubri.org/informatics).  

TUBRI encompasses the Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection, the largest collection of post-larval fishes in the world, housing over 8 million specimens.  The collection is international in scope, with a higher concentration of samples from the Gulf of Mexico and rivers of the Gulf South region than any other fish collection in the world.  The collection is recognized as a National Ichthyological Research Resource by the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists.  The collection is uniquely suited for use in ecological, environmental and evolutionary research. A number of rivers have been repetitively sampled at multiple sites for decades and common species in those rivers are represented by time series of large numbers of specimens for studies of population and community changes over time, species life history, diet and stable isotopes analyses.  Impact of the collection on scientific research is documented by continuous loans of specimens to other organizations and numerous publications. 

Qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent.
