The Research Assistant (or Associate) Professor will be a key member of the academic leadership team of the ByWater Institute at Tulane University. Together with the Director and fellow Institute faculty members, they will be responsible for developing Tulane’s capacity in interdisciplinary environmental research. They are expected to also have a strong personal research program with a focus on convergence research.

Half of the incumbent’s time will be dedicated to developing proposals with faculty from a diversity of units (schools) within Tulane University as well as with external partners. They will not necessarily be the PI or co-PI on these efforts but will nevertheless take on a key coordinating role in 2 such proposals each year. They will also contribute to programmatic efforts to increase and improve convergence research among Tulane departments and among our external partners. For example, they may organize workshops or symposia on a topic of broad interest. Tulane ByWater Institute will provide training resources and professional development to ensure success in these responsibilities.

Half of the Research Assistant/Associate Professor’s time will be dedicated to their personal research interests that fit into the overall strategy areas of the ByWater Institute and the vision of Thriving ByWater. Within eighteen months, they will be expected to seek funding for 3 academic months and 3 summer months of salary support in order to pursue that research.

Research Interests Sought

BWI seeks strong candidates with a research and scholarship background in social sciences and/or climate change justice.  The BWI strategic vision has a strong emphasis on community based participatory research and seeking real solutions to problems that are a priority for communities in our region and around the globe. The BWI leverages place - New Orleans, the Gulf coast, and the Mississippi River Basin – to test solutions that can be applied around the globe. Candidates should be able to apply their methods and practice to telescoping geographies – local to global. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary teams or with multi-disciplinary training. Preference will be given to candidates with experience communicating to broad audiences of stakeholders and to those with grant writing experience.


Qualifications:
  • A PhD in a social science field is required.
  • Research Experience is required.
  • Track record of successful grant writing is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of GIS is preferred.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams and/or multi-disciplinary training is preferred.
