The Hegi Family Career Development Center equips students and alumni to cultivate meaningful lives through career development, continuous learning, and professional growth. We provide relevant experiential learning opportunities for students to gain tangible skills that position them for professional success. Through these experiences, we empower students and alumni to find their passion and to navigate careers for a lifetime. 

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Assistant Director is expected to possess a current knowledge of career development theory and job market conditions and be able to apply this knowledge while advising students on self-assessment and career exploration, major choice, internship and job search methods, interviewing, and career choice. This position will be student centered in its focus and mentor engaged students.

Essential Functions:

  • Counsel/advise students individually on the topics of major/career decision making, experiential learning and networking processes. Conduct group meetings and psychoeducational workshops with students.
  • Effectively create and present workshops on various career development topics including career exploration, major choice and internship search strategies.  Mentor pre-major students and/or liberal arts and communication arts students via advising leadership groups, conducting orientation sessions, partnering with residence life, and leading alternative break excursions.
  • Assist with supervision, mentorship, and training for undergraduate Peer Mentors. Participate in career center presentations and projects. 
  • Create career development programming as well as mentor and advise international students with their job search, resume building, and experiential learning opportunities. Collaborate with other departments and offices to learn about resources and opportunities for international students.
  • Outreach to various offices and student groups to expand the Career Center's services to all students at SMU.  Establish and maintain relationships with other offices and departments on campus to create effective programming for students.
  • Utilize various technologies for presentations, webinars, and other virtual events for students and staff.  Other duties as assigned.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required.


Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or other related degree is required.

Three years’ experience in a student facing setting in higher education is required.

Experience in creating and presenting psycho-educational workshops is required.

Career counseling experience is preferred.

Experience in database management and career exploration tools and registration/recruiting system technologies is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and positively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Must have excellent interpersonal skills.  Must be able to build collaborative relationships with students, staff, alumni, corporate recruiters and community partners.

Candidate must be able to conduct effective presentations to large groups.

Candidate must be able to mentor the career development process of students via appropriate counseling and intervention techniques. Must be able to assist with quality employment and academic major choices.

Candidate must have well developed organizational skills that include effective planning, time management and project management. Must be able to manage concurrent projects, focused on deadlines and attentive to details.

Candidate must demonstrate strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems as well as devise solutions.

Must be able to handle sensitive information with complete confidentiality and professionalism.

Working knowledge of Career Services technology tools (Handshake, Career Shift, Big Interview) and database technologies is preferred.

Current knowledge of employment and career planning materials is preferred.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is required.
