Clinical Research Assistant, Clinical Research Unit - Georgetown University Medical Center

Clinical Research Assistant, Clinical Research Unit - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Clinical Research Assistant provides services as a certified DXA technician/coordinator as well as Clinical Research Assistant for the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) in responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

Approximately 40% of time is spent coordinating care of DXA patients scheduled on the CRU for research and non-research reasons. Care includes independent review of the medical record for health history, further assessment of bone health history, technical completion and analysis of scan, and results reporting to MD; and tracking scans, providing census data for billing, and establishing/maintaining SOPs for his/her practice.

Approximately 50% of time is spent assisting nurses with their clinical research and standard-of-care tasks, including vital signs, ECGs, and phlebotomy; transportation of subjects, pick-up and delivery of drugs from the research and main pharmacy; and processing, storing and shipping of laboratory specimens.

Approximately 10% of time is spent assisting the unit in administrative tasks such as inventory and ordering of supplies, copying and chart set-up, and fulfilling receptionist duties when the Unit Secretary is absent. If directed, they engage in coordination of prevention quality improvement measures as needed and provide clinical and laboratory support for off-site visits.

They perform all functions in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Medical Center's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the CRU Nurse and under the direct supervision of a nurse who delegates appropriate tasks, the Clinical Research Assistant functions autonomously and becomes a CRU expert in matters of DXA operation and procedures.

As well, they report to the DXA Training Coordinator or designee for scan training and sign off until certified and deemed competent. Once competent and certified, they work collaboratively with the DXA Training Coordinator to accomplish goals of DXA services for the CRU.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalency - preference for Bachelor's degree in Science or equivalent
  • Experience performing clinical assistant, phlebotomy, and clinical research assistant functions


Preferred qualifications
  • BLS certification
  • IV insertion skills
  • DXA experience


Selected candidate must complete certification for International Society for Clinical Densitometry certification within the first year of employment if they not have at hire date.
