Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job:

The Department of History at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the History of Medicine, to begin Fall 2023. We seek an historian who will enhance the department’s medical humanities initiatives and contribute to the intellectual vibrancy between the university’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences and College of Osteopathic Medicine. Research period and geographic specialization are open. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to a promising research agenda. The department especially welcomes candidates whose work maps onto one of the thematic tracks organizing the department’s M.A. program: (1) Rights & Identity; (2) War & Violence; and (3) Encounters & Exchanges. The teaching load is three courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities include upper-division and graduate courses in the History of Medicine, as well as the World History survey. We are especially interested in candidates who can develop topical courses concerning earlier periods in the history of medicine (prior to the 17th century). Online teaching experience is a plus.

Educational Requirements for the Position:

We strongly prefer candidates with a Ph.D. in History, but candidates holding the doctoral degree in a related discipline may be considered. The Ph.D. is required prior to appointment. ABD candidates may apply; however, the Ph.D. must be completed before the start of the appointment.

Other Requirements for the Position:

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sam Houston State University is strongly committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace that empowers all employees to reach their full potential. All members of the academic community share a responsibility for developing and maintaining an environment in which differences are valued and inclusiveness is practiced. The college welcomes applications from those who will contribute to the diversity of our community.

Special Instructions Summary:

To apply, upload a letter of application, a curriculum vitae; unofficial graduate transcripts (official transcripts of all post-secondary education will be required of all finalists prior to on-campus interviews); a diversity and inclusion statement, specifically addressing your qualifications and strategy for engaging all students at SHSU; a writing sample of chapter length; a sample syllabus for an upper division undergraduate course in the History of Medicine; and three letters of recommendation. Upload the syllabus as a single file to the Teaching Portfolio link.

If a candidate has not completed the doctorate, one letter must be from the candidate’s advisor, addressing the state of the dissertation and anticipated defense date.

Please note: References provided in the References section of the application will receive an automated email reference request at the time the application is submitted.

Review of applications will begin on November 28, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.
