Job Description Summary:

Within the Access Services Division of the Leatherby Libraries, the Library Assistant III will perform all the public service aspects of the Circulation Department. Provide student, staff, faculty and community patron assistance, including responding to in-person, telephone and email inquiries. Use the library system (Sierra) to check in/out library items including books, media, reserves and bookable rooms. Monitor stacks and conduct stacks maintenance including shifting and arranging of library materials. Collect fines, resolve disputes or negotiate acceptable resolutions. Conduct basic troubleshooting of photocopiers, printers and microform machines. Perform patron registration and data entry. Open and/or close building. Maintain and update departmental policies and forms. Catalog, process and manage all items placed on Course Reserve. Train and direct tasks of Library Assistants and student employees. Participate in the development of library and department policies and procedures. Provide support to Interlibrary Loan by assisting with document delivery, processing requests and answering inquires. Perform other duties as assigned to further the efficiency and services of the Leatherby Libraries.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 24 months of library experience, two years of college education or equivalent combination of experience/education.
  • Intermediate knowledge of written and spoken English, with the ability to read and write English at an appropriate level for this position.
  • Intermediate knowledge of computers to include Microsoft Office, email, web browsing, and other software applications with an ability to learn new technology as needed for the position.
  • Extensive contact with students, staff, faculty and community patrons on a general basis.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels from inside and outside of the university.
  • Exercise sound judgment based on current policies and procedures to make moderate decisions and consult with supervisor for major decisions.
  • Solid problem-solving skills with the ability to negotiate and resolve disputes.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and teamwork.
  • Possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, carry out or assign multiple projects.
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner.
  • Possess skill to perform arithmetic calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to train and direct tasks of Library Assistants and student employees.
  • Ability to understand, discuss and apply policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to the duties of this position.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to open/close building.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property and copyright.
  • Ability to use photocopiers, printers, microform machines and learn basic troubleshooting skills for those machines.
  • Ability to reconcile financial records and process deposits.
  • Knowledge of library technology, processes and procedures preferably in an academic library.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records. FERPA training provided and completed every two years.
  • Ability to use Sierra, WorldCat, OCLC, Tipasa and Article Exchange (will train).
