General Summary

The Institutional Research department provides ongoing analysis of student, employee, and community data to enable Highline College to become more equitable, inclusive, and representative of its community in its learning environments, programs, services, and partnerships. The Research Analyst works under the general direction of the Director of Institutional Research, collaborating with a diverse group of administrators, faculty, and staff from across the institution to build our capacity to achieve our broad equity-focused strategic goals as well as the goals of specific grant funders. This position will be responsible for research design, data collection, analysis, interpretation and visualization in addition to providing small and large group training to build data literacy.

This is an full-time, at-will exempt position. Hours of work may include evening, weekend and travel. This position is eligible for remote/hybrid work subject to supervisor approval.

This is a grant-funded position with the grant ending 12/31/2026.

Essential Tasks

Under the direction of the Director of Institutional Research this position will:

  • Independently lead a variety of institutional research projects related to current and prospective grants, Guided Pathways initiatives and college goals. Clarify research questions and specific information needs; ensure methods follow federal guidelines; use appropriate research methods; identify data sources; determine appropriate level of detail and interpret results; summarize findings and implications; respond to questions and requests for information;
  • Conduct complex statistical analysis to support institutional effectiveness;
  • Conduct research related to pre- and post-enrollment to enhance the college’s understanding of student perceptions, experiences and progression;
  • Provide written, graphical and oral presentations of research, customized for the intended audience;
  • Independently design and build comprehensive Tableau dashboards requiring advanced knowledge of SQL and the ability to translate complex reporting needs into technical specifications, including calculations, custom groups, parameters, filtering criteria and aggregations;
  • Collaborate with Guided Pathways team leads and others to conduct student focus groups and administer surveys in support of the college’s institutional effectiveness goals;
  • Design and lead interactive and engaging data literacy sessions for the campus, both online and in person, in order to develop a culture of continuous, effective and ethical interpretation of multiple types of data;
  • Design customized training for individuals or small groups on new dashboards;
  • Work closely with IT Data Managers to optimize data for use in research and visualization;
  • Serve on college-wide committees as needed;
  • Participate in the activities of the Research and Planning Commission of the WA State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.

Technical Competencies:
  • Demonstrated experience in, and extensive knowledge of, both quantitative and qualitative analysis and assessment using statistics and applied research methodologies;
  • Demonstrated experience disaggregating data and viewing data with a racial equity lens;
  • Demonstrated competence with statistical software, spreadsheets, pivot tables, and database querying software, complex relational databases, data management, and development of queries in PeopleSoft or similar Enterprise Resource Planning system to extract data from multiple, complex data sets;
  • Demonstrated usage of SQL or other program language to extract and merge complex data sets;
  • Experience creating documents, spreadsheets, databases and visualizations to prepare reports and present statistical analysis.
  • Organizational skills/time management:
  • Experience prioritizing multiple tasks and projects to meet ongoing and sometimes competing deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and make appropriate decisions or judgments relating to complex research projects;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to respond effectively to end users' data needs.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills:
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain successful and effective relationships with a diverse, multicultural staff and student population.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to effectively convey complex ideas and information using language that is appropriate to both the complexity of the topic and the knowledge and understanding of the audience.
  • Strong oral communication skills.
  • Experience conducting interactive and dynamic training sessions for diverse groups of end users including the ability to assess skills gaps and adjust course mid-training.

  • Ability to:
    • Use statistical software, spreadsheets, pivot tables, and database querying software (i.e. Access, Excel, SQL Server or other relational database software);
    • Transform raw data into informative and usable information;
    • Design and produce accessible charts, tables and dashboards using Tableau or other visualization software;
    • Communicate clearly with excellent oral and written communication skills;
    • Write and present information in a clear and concise manner;
    • Demonstrate sensitivity working with individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic and cultural backgrounds;
    • Prioritize projects and tasks independently and meet deadlines;
    • Work collaboratively with the college and larger community.
    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Statistics, Public Administration, Business Administration, Social Science, Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field; AND
    • Minimum three years recent research experience, preferably in educational institutional research, including independently leading research projects, with focus on research design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation; AND
    • Minimum three years experience building complex Tableau visualizations requiring advanced knowledge of SQL and dashboard optimization (formal training or certification may substitute for one year of experience); AND
    • Minimum one year of experience designing and leading training for end users of various skill levels.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master's Degree;
    • Experience in a community college setting;
    • Experience supporting research and data needs of large grants;
    • Experience working with PeopleSoft data.
