Duties and Responsibilities

This is a .50 FTE, 9 or 12-month faculty position (50% administration) in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida, reporting to the Global Food Systems Institute Associate Vice President of (GFSI AVP). This assignment may be subject to change per the needs of the unit. This position includes a highly competitive salary and opportunities for collaboration at a top five U.S. land-grant university.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

A primary aim of the position of Associate Director (AD) is to support the Global Food Systems Institute Associate Vice President (GFSI-AVP) in establishing and sustaining global programs. The AD will work under the direction of GFSI-AVP with departments across IFAS to cultivate a globally adaptive and versatile organization that engages with challenging environments, particularly in the developing world.

Essential Functions of the position are as follows: -

Global Capacity Building - 45%

The AD works with the AVP to:
  • Implement initiatives to grow the portfolio of GFSI projects through grants and gifts.
  • Oversee grantseeking and new business development through intelligence gathering and proposal development in collaboration with faculty, government, and industry partners.
  • Collaborate with the Advancement Office to present GFSI to donors.
  • Oversee reporting and publishing of project outcomes and impacts.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility for sponsored research awards including compliance.
  • Works with UF core departments, including IRB and sponsored agencies, to ensure compliance.
  • Ensures that GFSI's communication strategy contributes to organizational objectives, drives engagement, and builds support for global recognition of the organization.
  • Manages collaboration with academic departments to support international education, outreach, and research within IFAS.

Administrative Duties - 55%
  • Aids the AVP in creating annual operating expense budgets.
  • Supervises staff to ensure timely execution of activities undertaken by GFSI.
  • Assists the AVP in goal setting, strategic plans, and capacity building.
  • Coordinates campus visits.
  • Oversees events to promote GFSI and build global capacity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Global Food Systems Institute (GFSI) brings together interdisciplinary teams working on various aspects of improving food security, nutrition and food systems. GFSI strives to develop transformative and sustainable research-based solutions that enhance nutrition, health, livelihoods, and the environment globally through improved food systems. GFSI addresses critical transdisciplinary issues as it draws upon UF's combined strengths in research, education, and outreach, and it strategically supports UF's position as a top five U.S. public university and the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) position as the top agriculture and natural resources college in the U.S.

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

*internal search - open to current permanent UF faculty only*
  • a Ph.D. (foreign equivalent acceptable) is required in an agricultural and natural resources field
  • A minimum of seven years of successful experience working internationally.
  • Strong grant winning history leading international projects.
  • Strong academic record with recognized research, teaching, and extension collaborations involving diverse disciplinary groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse constituencies and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and customer service-driven attitude to lead a team that will identify research opportunities and stimulate grant seeking among faculty and staff.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment and to mentor and develop direct reports.
  • Ability to communicate, interact, and facilitate conversations with stakeholders and donors in cross-cultural settings.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate in a second language is preference but not a requirement, e.g., Spanish, French or Arabic
