The Center for the Study of Government and the Individual (CSGI) is an independent academic center within UCCS which exists to study the economic, political, constitutional, and social foundations of a free and flourishing society. To accomplish that end, it holds public events by leading scholars, supports research, provides academic enrichment opportunities for undergraduates, and provides professional development opportunities for K-12 history and civics teachers. The Director of Civic Outreach will primarily be responsible for developing and directing the Program on the American Constitution of which the professional development programs for teachers are a part. The center created this program at the requirement of the CU Regent to help improve understanding of America's constitutional and political traditions and development. The Program Director of Civic Outreach will work under the Executive Director of CSGI, Joshua Dunn, and will support other initiatives of the center.

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is one of four campuses in the University of Colorado system and is home to over 9,000 undergraduate and 1,800 graduate students. Job Duties:
    Direct CSGI's Program on the American Constitution. Initiate and develop strategic partnerships in the community outside of UCCS. Organize professional development seminars for secondary teachers in civics, government, and American history Oversee the development civics curricula for use in secondary education, including organizing reading materials for teachers participating in seminars, creating lesson plans and potential lectures, developing programs that teachers can plug into their classes in K-12 education. Develop programs for high school students interested in American government and politics, such as organizing events for high school students interested in studying or engaging in American politics to participate in 1-to-2-day UCCS seminar on special topics on American politics. Plan and organize a yearly distinguished lecture on the American Constitution, including event organizing and planning, reaching out to potential speakers, organizing travel, schedules, reserving space on or off campus, and marketing to the community. Plan and organize other center lectures, seminars, and colloquia Engage in outreach to center supporters, such as keeping center supporters aware of UCCS events and inviting them to events, as well as inviting donors to give them an opportunity to keep them informed of UCCS activities. Engage in center fundraising, such as calling potential donors, writing grant and gift proposals, and coordinating with UCCS development. Supervise other staff as the program grows. Think strategically about CSGI to develop new ideas for events, programs, etc. to benefit the center.

This position has been determined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

What We Offer:

Salary Range: Generally starting at $51,053 - $70,418 per year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Tentative Search Timeline:
    Priority will be given to applications submitted by October 13, 2022. However, this posting will remain open until filled. The potential dates for virtual HireVue interviews will be October 19th through October 22nd, 2022. The potential dates for interviews with the supervisor and appointing authority will be October 27th, 28th, and 31st, 2022. The potential employee start date is December 1, 2022.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in any field.
  • 4 years of experience working in American government or politics or 4 years of experience teaching American politics

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in field related civics--Political Science or American History
  • 5 years of work experience in American politics
  • 3 years of experience in fund raising and event planning
  • 3 years of supervisory experience

Physical Requirements:

Exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those of sedentary work. Light work requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
