Job Summary

The Research Security Officer will independently monitor research operations to ensure that research activities at AU are conducted in accordance with applicable federal, state and local laws and with USG and AU policies. They will be responsible for conducting risk assessments and drafting risk mitigation recommendations to drive improvement in research compliance at AU. In addition, they will promote a culture of compliance and ethics in research at AU, while maintaining focus on customer service and process improvement.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Under the direction of the Director, Research Ethics and Compliance, operate the AU Research Security and Export Control Programs, including the identification and mitigation of compliance issues related to sponsored research, shipping, international travel, and international visitors. Provide guidance for compliance with research security, federal export control and economic sanctions regulations. Assist with policy development and communication across departments to ensure that export control and research security questions are raised and addressed in a timely manner. Conduct restricted party screening in support of funding applications, foreign travel and international visitors.
  • Implement a set of related risk metrics and reports, including losses and incidents, key risk exposures and early warning indications to support the Director, Research Ethics and Compliance in ensuring that AU Research Security Program operations are appropriately communicated to the AU Compliance & Ethics Program, the AU Enterprise Risk Management Program, and the Audit, Compliance, Ethics and Risk Management Steerina Committee.
  • Develop and deliver training programs throughout the university in order to increase situational awareness and to inform members of the AU community of pertinent federal and state regulations standards and the applicable University System of Georgia, AU, and AUHS policies and procedures related to research security and export control.
  • Monitor shared resource emails accounts (i.e. Research Security) and assist the Director, Research Ethics and Compliance in investigations of reported problems or suspected violations related to research security and/or export control. Support the response to information requests related to research security initiated externally by both state and federal governmental agencies as well as non-governmental agencies, such as third-party payers. Determine and carry out appropriate action in collaboration with the Director, Research Ethics and Compliance, legal counsel and senior leadership of AU.
  • Assist with selecting, implementing, and maintaining information systems for conducting research, for restricted party screening, and for recordkeeping.
  • Perform other tasks as needed to facilitate compliance with research policies, regulations and guidelines within Research Administration and the broader research community at AU.

    Required Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree with five years of experience in research and/or compliance. U.S. citizenship is required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Ideal candidates will have experience in export controls and trade sanctions or related areas in an environment of similar scale and complexity; A master's degree or PhD, preferably in science or technology, is strongly preferred; Experience with software system vetting and implementation is also preferred; Experience in compliance and/or research, exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills, and an open, transparent communication style; Possess a genuine interest in collaborating and building trusting relationships with stakeholders.

    Shift/Salary/Benefits

    Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)

    Pay Grade: 22

    Salary: $64,553/annually - $87,147/annually

    Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
