Primary Function of Organizational Unit :

The primary purpose of the Dean’s Office of Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences is the administration of East Carolina University’s largest academic unit. Harriot College consists of 16 departments and offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. As the home of the liberal arts and sciences at ECU, we are united by our shared purposes, which include to:

Harriot College employs approximately 450 full-time faculty and staff, and the Dean’s Office oversees all budget, personnel and academic matters in its departments, interdisciplinary programs, centers, institutes, and auxiliary offices

Job Duties :

INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University.

The Thomas W. Rivers Distinguished Professorship for Global understanding/International Studies can be awarded to any Harriot College faculty member in any discipline. The person appointed as the Rivers Distinguished Professor is actively engaged in significant research with an international dimension, and will continue to have this as an important aspect of their responsibilities; shares the results of their research with the university community through seminars, classes, conferences, and other suitable means, as well as with the broader scholarly community through publications; serves as a consultant to departments and interdisciplinary programs in the College to help them increase their international dimensions (for example: student mobility, curricular and co-curricular programming, faculty and staff support, and/or partnership development); and provides leadership within the College to embrace the value of growing internationalization on campus. This distinguished professorship in international studies will provide a valuable resource for all of Harriot College’s departments and programs. The professorship endowment will make funds available to be used by the faculty member holding the title of Rivers Distinguished Professor for 1.5 academic years with possible reappointment.

This appointment will be up to a .40 FTE reassignment with a planned start date of January 9, 2023.

This position is contingent upon funding availability.

Minimum Education/Experience :

Must currently hold tenure and the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor in any THCAS department or program at ECU.

  • A statement of no more than 2 pages, written in a manner that can be understood by reviewers from a variety of disciplines, that describes (1) the current state of the nominee’s research and a vision of future research, (2) how the professorship will enhance the nominee’s research and scholarship, and (3) how the nominee will use this professorship to improve understanding of the importance international studies in higher education and to the public at large. The American Council on Education provides a useful model of comprehensive internationalization.
  • Arrange for 3 letters of reference, one of which will be external to ECU, to be emailed to Hannah Morris (morrish17@ecu.edu).

Three official letters of reference are required upon selection as candidate of choice and will be collected via PeopleAdmin. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
