The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Ajmera Transplant Centre at the University Health Network (UHN) are seeking to recruit an Academic Transplant Respirologist in the role of Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program. The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor with the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is March 1, 2023.

The Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program will work in conjunction with the Surgical Director of the Lung Transplant Program and will be responsible for developing and executing the clinical, education and research activities relating to lung transplantation and using assigned resources provided by the Director of the Ajmera Transplant Centre. The Medical Director will play a leadership role within the Ajmera Transplant Centre, specifically to help guide and execute UHN Transplant strategic priorities, and to determine resources needed for the present and future growth of the program.

The Ajmera Transplant Centre is one of the largest volume transplant centers in North America, currently performing about 600 organ transplants per year. The Ajmera Transplant Centre has a strong academic focus in both basic and clinical sciences. The Toronto Lung Transplant Program is the largest in the world and currently performs approximately 200 adult and pediatric lung transplants per year. The lung transplant program is home to a large team of collegial and highly productive academic transplant respirologists and thoracic surgeons supported by a skilled multidisciplinary team. Areas of active research include ex-vivo organ assessment and repair, ischemia/reperfusion injury, graft immunomodulation, virtual care, rehab, and chronic lung allograft dysfunction. The Lung Transplant Program also has highly successful and internationally sought out surgical and medical fellowship training programs.

The successful candidate should be a strong academic physician as evidenced by a proven track record in transplant related research, education or quality improvement. The successful candidate will fulfill the academic position description of Clinician Scientist or Clinician Investigator or Clinician Quality Improvement. The applicant should have strong leadership potential and international recognition in the field of lung transplantation. They must hold an MD degree, as well as clinical qualifications related to transplant respirology, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario (CPSO). The candidate must be proficient in English.

Estimated remuneration will be in the range of $300,000 – 400,000 per annum and commensurate with academic rank, qualifications, and experience based on fee for service. The applicant may be eligible for benefits or a relocation package. Further financial support package for academic activities will be available based on candidate qualifications.
