General Description:

The Assistant Athletics Director of VFL Films is responsible for the management of creative video, storytelling and brand growth for Tennessee Athletics.  This position will serve on the athletics department senior leadership team, manage strategy for all creative video and manage the staff working across all sports.  The Assistant AD of VFL Films will work collaboratively with 151 Creative, Communications, Fan Experience & the Vol Network to enhance the storytelling efforts of Tennessee Athletics. In conjunction with 151 Creative, this position will set and use innovation to raise the bar for creative standards and Tennessee brand promotion as it relates to all Tennessee athletics teams, student-athletes, coaches, and media rights partners.  This position also serves as liaison to departmental and external clients.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creative initiatives - This person has complete oversight regarding the creative direction of video content for VFL Films.  Significant time will be spent mentoring employees and evaluating the work that is being done across all platforms (social, in-venue, website & other various events). Ensure staff is structured accurately & positioned to succeed. A large part of this role will be insuring that the creative content meets the goals and objectives for promoting the Tennessee Athletics brand across all platforms and that each member of VFL Films works collaboratively within the external team (151 Creative, Communications, Fan Experience & each sport team). Use an innovative approach to creative direction, push VFL Films to lead the way in college sports. 
  • Administration - Establish goals for the creative video team (goals may vary sport-to-sport, year-to-year, regular season vs. post-season). Oversee budget decisions. Review and approve equipment purchases. Maintain a thorough awareness of current equipment inventory & needs for the staff to accomplish all projects. Manage computer inventory, editing software & needs for staff to succeed.  Manage, schedule & guide staff for coverage of all sports. Manage both internal & external relationships, ensuring growth of coverage year-over-year.  Perform and evaluate best practices related to spending/cost savings of the marketing budget.
  • Communication & Collaboration - Fosters communication and collaboration to maintain a high level of productivity. Communicates directly with Associate Athletics Director of Communications, Associate Athletics Director of Fan Experience & Assistant Athletics for Digital & Creative Strategy to maintain awareness about projects, priorities, needs and issues related to the creative teams. Researches and implements new workflows, technologies and best practices in order to keep Tennessee Athletics leading the way in college sports. Educates internal and external clients about the capabilities and capacity of VFL Films. Participate in creative content meetings, ensure staff is as well across all sports.
  • Policies & Best Practices - Quality control projects being produced for Tennessee Athletics. Set and enforce guidelines to creative video standards.  Foster cooperative relationships across Tennessee Athletics. Other duties as assigned and projects as athletic department grows.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.


Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is required. Master’s Degree is preferred.    

 

Experience:    

Minimum five years of experience with a Power 5 collegiate program in creative content, video production or digital media.  Experience in digital content or creative with a track record of innovation that showcases management of a sizable and/or highly active digital inventory. Preferred experience as a recognized, high-end creative storyteller.  It’s preferable this individual have previous experience managing creative content at the Division I collegiate or professional sports level.

 

Skills:   

  • The ability to manage and communicate with a group of creative personalities is essential.
  • Ability to think strategically, possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills.
  • Working knowledge of equipment, software, lighting and content production.
  • Knowledge of best practices related to Power 5 video departments and/or professional sports teams. 
  • Knowledge of creative storytelling and branding.
  • Skilled in non-linear editing, script writing, producing, and videography.
  • Ability to pitch campaigns, ideas & creative content.
