The Department of Latina/Latino Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign invites applications for two Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Associates. These are one-year appointments with a start date of August 16, 2023. Postdoctoral research associates are expected to give a presentation on their research project and to teach one of the department’s regularly offered undergraduate courses. The postdoctoral research associates will be housed in the Department of Latina/Latino Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences but will also be provided opportunities to build a supportive on-campus community with the associates from African American Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, and Gender and Women’s Studies.

The candidates must have attained a Ph.D. after August 15, 2018. Individuals working toward a Ph.D. will be considered, but the dissertation must be defended and deposited prior to August 15, 2023. The primary focus of the successful candidates’ research must be U.S. Latinas/os/xs, broadly constructed. We seek postdoctoral scholars who advance the necessary work of feminist, queer/trans, anti-racist, hemispheric (i.e. Americas), transnational, postcolonial, and decolonial theoretical perspectives. We are open to all approaches to scholarship in Latinx Studies, broadly conceived, with a special interest in scholars working in Afro-Latinx Studies, Indigenous Studies, Caribbean Studies, Disability Studies, Literary Studies, Political Science, Education, and/or Environmental Justice. Creative, non-traditional, and experimental research from all disciplines and interdisciplines are eligible and will be considered.

We also welcome and encourage applicants who have had non-traditional pathways to academia, including taking time off to care for loved ones, single parenting / guardianship, and individuals who have excelled in the arts, community organizing and advocacy, or professional service.

The strength of the department can only be enhanced by scholars, staff, and faculty who are committed to continuing to transform the world through the ethics of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

These are external appointments. Current University of Illinois faculty members and graduate students at the Urbana-Champaign campus are not eligible to apply. Scholars who received their Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are also not eligible for these appointments.
