The Advising First mission is to provide a network of professional academic advisors and success coaches who support students as they establish and realize their personal, academic, and career goals at The Florida State University. The primary focus of our program is to assist and guide students, so they are retained at the University from the time of enrollment through to graduation. With expertise on university policies, resources and opportunities, and extensive training in effective guidance, our Advising First professionals promote student progress and growth throughout their academic careers. Through the relationships with advisors and/or coaches, our students are empowered to take personal responsibility and ownership of their educational endeavors. Our mission is achieved through one-on-one meetings, student workshops and conferences, web-based outreach efforts, campus-wide events, and class and residence hall presentations. Responsibilities

• Responsible for advising undergraduate students in the development of academic schedules appropriate for stated education goals.
• Takes a proactive approach to academic advising, seeking out contact with students and staff, and providing advising services on request.
• Works with academic departments and other units within Undergraduate Studies to develop advising programs.
• Engages, helps plan, and participates on special projects for Advising First/UGST.
• Recommends changes and additions in existing policies and procedures that positively implements a successful advising program.
• Performs special projects as assigned by Undergraduate Studies.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)

• Computer skills to include experience with Microsoft Office and web-based applications.
• Ability to interpret and explain policies, procedures, goals, and objectives to students, parents, faculty and staff.
• Ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously with minimal to moderate supervision.
• Ability to deal with people in a calm, confident manner and with complete objectivity.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, supervisors, and interdepartmental personnel.
• Attention to detail with a high standard of integrity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of University rules and regulations.
• Prior customer service experience and/or experience working with students in an educational setting.
• Ability to extract complex academic information from various sources and maintain confidentiality.
• Experience and/or working knowledge of student advising, counseling, or working one-on-one with people in a professional or academic setting.
• Creative problem-solving skills.
• Master's degree is preferred.

Other Information

This position will have access to student data covered under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. The position requires a high level of discretion and knowledge of legal issues in relation to the confidentiality of data.

Anticipated Salary Range

Starting salary is $42,000.
