Departmental Overview

The Department of Molecular & Cell Biology (MCB) is home to undergraduate and graduate academic programs as well as Faculty Research performed by faculty organized in five divisions:
  • Biochemistry, Biophysics. and Structural Biology
  • Cell and Developmental Biology
  • Genetics, Genomics, and Development
  • Immunology and Pathogenesis
  • Neurobiology

The teaching and research activities of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) concern the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms. This agenda covers a broad range of specialized disciplines, including biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, tumor biology, microbiology, immunology, pathogenesis and neurobiology. The types of living organisms from which the departmental faculty draws its working materials are as diverse as its disciplinary specializations, ranging from viruses and microbes through plants, roundworms, annelids, arthropods, and mollusks to fish, amphibia, and mammals. The faculty of the department is organized into five divisions: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Cell and Developmental Biology; Genetics, Genomics and Development; Neurobiology; and Immunology and Pathogenesis.

The Departments of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) and Integrative Biology (IB) together are among the largest academic departments at UC Berkeley. By several measures (including number of faculty and students, budget, and assigned square feet), these departments are larger than many UCB colleges and schools. The two departments represent over 186 faculty FTE (including Adjuncts, Professors of the Graduate School, active emeriti and 15 HHMI professors); 150 postdocs and other research positions; 375 graduate students; 80 department staff members; and 8 recharge centers. Financial resources include approximately $51M in annual extramural funding (which accounts for over half of the total sponsored research awards in the College of Letters & Science) and over $46M other fund sources. The department has 1,800 declared undergraduate majors (the largest majors on the Berkeley campus) and a total annual enrollment in classes of ~20,000. Department personnel are currently housed in seven buildings located in three widely separated parts of the campus.

Responsibilities
    Provide general bioinformatics analysis support for omic projects and is mainly responsible for data analysis and software compilations including next-generation sequence alignment, polymorphism identification, expression analysis, and visualization tools and browsers Summarize data analysis results in the form suitable as the basis for the first draft of written reports, and makes preliminary interpretations of the data. Be proficient and maintain proficiency in the development, testing, and maintenance of modular software pipelines for genome sequencing, assembly, annotation, metagenomic analysis, and genotyping using high-throughput sequencing platforms including 454, Illumina, and Pacific Biosciences. Manage data including loading and querying data from database systems, downloading omic data from public repositories, and transforming data to the necessary formats. In a consultation setting, interact with investigators to understand scientific questions. Define the scope of work and propose an analytical plan with a time estimate for its completion. Identify, evaluate, and incorporate relevant algorithms and software pipelines by reviewing pertinent literature in bioinformatics and computational biology. Provide bioinformatics expertise in the design of experiments and studies, including research proposal development, sample size determination, and plans for interim reviews and final analysis. Develop tools and pipelines as necessary to keep pace with rapid advances in sequencing technology. Interact with and support other bioinformatics colleagues in pursuing excellence in Research and Education, that is, the generation of new ideas and concepts, and their dissemination. Educate others about bioinformatics and computational biology through mentoring and teaching colleagues, investigators, fellows, and graduate students. Be capable of organizing and teaching formal bioinformatics courses, interdisciplinary courses, continuing education courses, and seminars. Assist or collaborate in the preparation of grant proposals, publications, and presentations involving omic data.

Required Qualifications
    3-5 years of Research Experience. Minimum 2 years of professional experience in the healthcare or pharmaceutical industries working with electronic medical record data. Experience in bioinformatics and biology, with a degree of experience in Omics data analysis. Strong understanding and experience in researching and resolving data issues with a logical, instinctive, and problem-solving mentality working with large, complex, and incomplete sources. Experience programming with programming languages such as R or Python and proficiency in SQL.

Education/Training:
    Bachelor's degree in computer science, machine learning, applied mathematics, econometrics, statistics, engineering, physics, or related discipline and/or equivalent related experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
    3-5 years of postdoctoral research experience in academia or industry involving bioinformatics and/or machine learning.

Education/Training:
    Ph.D. in Systems Biology, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a directly related field of research specialization.

Salary & Benefits
  • This is a full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly. The hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $35.59 - $37.36.
    This is a hybrid position, eligible for 50% remote capability.
