Job Details

Music Studies (Assistant or Associate Professor). Skidmore College, a vibrant liberal arts college with a long-standing and thriving investment in music, invites applications from music scholars (broadly defined to include historical, theoretical, cognitive, and anthropological/sociological approaches--specialization is open) who are committed to teaching music within the context of a liberal arts college.  The successful candidate will have expertise that equips them to teach about a range of musics and methods, and with a variety of pedagogies.  Primary teaching will consist of: core courses in (ethno)musicology and/or theory, including our gateway “Thinking About Music”; upper-level seminars in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise; and an interdisciplinary first-year seminar.  A background in applied music, and/or a demonstrated ability to integrate musical creation (e.g., performance, ensemble-direction, composition, improvisation) with humanities-based study is desirable. We seek an imaginative, engaging, and energetic colleague with a disposition toward collaboration within a highly interdependent faculty. The successful candidate will support and contribute to the growing diversity of our academic community by proactively fostering an environment of inclusivity; individuals from historically underrepresented groups, and those with experience teaching and mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds, are encouraged to apply.

Education Required: PhD or ABD required.

Required documents needed to apply: Applicants must submit a letter of application, cv, and contact information for 3-5 references (who will only be contacted at a later stage of the search).  Letters of application should clearly state: the applicant’s interest in liberal-arts education and in Skidmore in particular; the applicant’s understanding of, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and the applicant’s scholarly and teaching interests and achievements.  Submit applications online here.  Application review will begin January 3, 2023.

Pay Range:  Commensurate with experience

In order to prevent or significantly reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission at Skidmore College and protect all members of the College community from infection, successful candidates will be required to submit proof of full vaccination as a condition of employment, unless exempted as a reasonable accommodation of a medical condition or sincerely religious belief or practice.

EEO STATEMENT

Employment at Skidmore College is contingent upon an acceptable background check result.

CREATIVE THOUGHT MATTERS.

Organization

Skidmore is a highly selective liberal arts college with a reputation for its creative approaches to just about everything. With its relatively small size and student-faculty ratio, the College is a close-knit academic community. Skidmore is known for its faculty of teacher-scholars devoted to the instruction and mentoring of undergraduates—approximately 2,400 talented men and women from some 47 states and 46 countries.

A great education is all about putting academic theory and creative expression into practice. That’s what our founder, Lucy Skidmore Scribner, believed. Skidmore’s not an ivory tower. Never has been. Never will be. It’s a place where faculty and students work together, then figure out how to use what they’ve learned to make a difference in the world. This practical focus often leads to cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, where students carry multiple majors, student-faculty research is common, and internships and community service are standard. It also leads to interesting and unusual combinations of activities, frequently woven into an intellectual passion.

If this kind of experience resonates with you, why not take a closer look at Skidmore?
