Position description

The Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to study, under the supervision of Professor Daniel Stolper, stable isotopic geochemistry of H2 as a means for measuring the reactivity of H2 in the subsurface. The motivation is to better understand the fate of H2 during geological storage. Goals of the project are to measure equilibrium and kinetic isotope effects during isotope exchange between H2 and H2O as a function of temperature, pH, and presence/absence of minerals including the measurement of D2 clumped isotopes. Work will involve use of experimental systems including high-pressure and high-temperature hydrothermal gold cells and batch reactors and isotope-ratio mass spectrometers including carrier-gas systems and a high-resolution dual-inlet system. Work is supported by a 5-year grant from the Department of Energy.

The successful candidate will be designing and conducting experiments and measuring the hydrogen isotopic composition of H2 and H2O, including D2 clumped isotopes.
