Position description

The Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP) seeks an expert in the application of geographic information science (GIS) for landscape architecture and environmental planning at the rank of assistant (tenure-track) or associate (tenured) professor level.

The primary concerns of our field--the design of public space, urban ecology, and ecosystem management--all have explicit implications for issues of inclusion, equity, and diversity, core values in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. Candidates will have to demonstrate how they plan to contribute to these values through their research, teaching, mentoring, and service.

Faculty and students are engaged in the critical examination of complex social factors - e.g., the intersection of race and ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, power and privilege, poverty and inequality, restorative justice -and their impact on the built environment. Both faculty and students create opportunities for action and the implementation of theory into practice. As a faculty member at UC Berkeley, the successful candidate will actively pursue a research program related to modeling and mitigation strategies for contemporary problems of both urban and rural environments. Their work should cover different aspects of GIS analytics and workflows, including data acquisition, analysis, and the understanding of the interconnectedness and interdependency of the social, built, and natural environments. Their research should also engage innovative forms and sources of geospatial data (e.g., light detection and ranging (lidar), multi-source remote sensing products, etc.), the creation of integrated processing systems of an array of data types and spatial resolutions, and the application of data outcomes to critical landscape and environmental decision-making, such as issues of environmental and climate justice. Examples may include but are not limited to the effects of climate change and other stressors (such as wildfire, sea level rise, and natural hazards) on urban environmental and human systems; spatial analyses of threats and risks to human lives, health, well-being, property, or infrastructure; the analysis and forecasting of landscape change drivers such as land use trends, human mobility, displacement, and/or environmental transitions; and other relevant subjects.

Successful candidates are expected to have expertise in Geospatial Science, Geomatics, GIS, Remote Sensing, and Data Analytics. They should have proficient knowledge of data and technology relevant to GIS research including global navigation satellite systems (GNSS); data acquisition and analysis from multiple remote sensing platforms, including satellite, airborne, and unoccupied sensors; geographic surveying and censuses; proficiency in analytical tools, geostatistics, and relevant computing packages and programs.

The Department expects candidates to teach both entry-level and advanced courses in geospatial data acquisition, spatial analysis, data structures and management, environmental model building, geo-statistics, multivariate modeling, artificial intelligence, programming, and cartographic visualization. The selected candidate is expected to secure extramural funding, direct the research activities of graduate students in the Department's professional Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program, and contribute to coordination, student mentoring, and growth of the Department's PhD Program.

The Department is situated within the College of Environmental Design along with the departments of City and Regional Planning and Architecture. In addition, the candidate has the opportunity to participate in the interdisciplinary, campus-wide environmental research agendas of the Berkeley Energy and Climate Initiative, the Center for Information Technology Research in Service to Society, the Center for Environmental Design Research, and the Institute of Urban and Regional Development. Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application
Preferred qualifications
PhD in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning, or other fields relevant to the position and/or professional experience with a Master in Landscape Architecture (MLA) is desirable.
