Research Technologist


    We are seeking a Research Technologist at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. This position will involve using cellular and molecular biology techniques to study epithelial growth and invasion. We are seeking a highly motivated, energetic, independent individual, with an interest in developmental biology and breast cancer. This is an excellent opportunity to further your training and education in a dynamic and stimulating scientific environment. Work requires use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. The job requires an understanding of the theory behind molecular and cell biology experiments and will involving applying analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. Strong organizational and communication skills will be required to carry out assigned projects, including assisting with general maintenance and administration of the laboratory, equipment and supplies. The successful candidate will also assist the lab manager as needed with the maintenance of our extensive transgenic mouse colony. Mouse work will include weaning, tagging and tailing mice, genotyping, and setting up new matings to ensure a sufficient number of the correct mice for experimental use.



      The Ewald laboratory is focused on identifying the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive the formation of mammalian epithelial organs and their destruction during cancer progression. Technically, the lab combines 3D culture, molecular genetics, bulk and single cell sequencing and advanced microscopy to understand how specific genes regulate discrete cell behaviors in growing epithelial tissues during normal development and breast cancer. Research in the lab makes extensive use of 3D organotypic culture of primary cells isolated from genetically engineered mouse models and from patient tissue.



        Specific Duties & Responsibilities


        • Following established procedures or protocols and utilizing aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include: tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques, primary cell culture, subcellular separation methods, and techniques associated with protein biochemistry and molecular biology.
        • General laboratory support: for example, preparing solutions and reagents following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
        • Lab administration duties will involve ordering and setting up new equipment, monitoring inventory levels, ordering materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, and receiving and unpacking orders.
        • Operating basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, spectrophotometer, electrophoresis units, light microscope, and laminar flow hood. Will likely also conduct experiments utilizing more sophisticated instrumentation, such as thermal cyclers, luminometer and confocal microscope.
        • Data entry and the use of databases and various software applications, such as spreadsheets, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data.
        • Work in the laboratory requires very precise experimental technique, in strict accordance with written protocols. It also requires thorough and precise recording of the results of experiments.
        • Must be willing to work with mice, with mouse models of human cancer, and with human cells and tissue.
        • Must be able to follow experimental protocols, monitor animals and maintain health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines. Prior mouse experience preferred, but not necessary.
        • Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
        • Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate.


        Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
        • Must be willing to work with mice, with mouse models of human cancer, and with human cells and tissue.
        • Must be able to follow experimental protocols, monitor animals and maintain health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines.
        • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.


        Minimum Qualifications
        • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
        • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.


        Preferred Qualifications
        • Minimum of a significant (> 6 month) undergraduate research experience in a comparable laboratory. Comparable laboratory experience may be substituted for educational requirement.
        • Prior mouse experience preferred, but not necessary.

        Starting Salary Range: $15.00 - $20.40 - $25.50/hr (Commensurate with Experience)
