SARE Program Director
We are seeking a SARE (Summer Academic Research Experience) Program Director, (who will be responsible for directing, implementing, and executing the SARE program and helping operate the overarching CSM (Careers in Science and Medicine) program.

The active portion of SARE runs for 8 weeks during the summer months and includes 40% of time spent on intense academic remediation and/or fortification as appropriate for each scholar. When the program operates in person, scholars spend the remaining 60% of their time working in labs on cutting edge research projects under the mentorship of doctoral or postdoctoral trainees. The Director oversees all operational aspects of the program as well as executes the structured academic portion (e.g., delivers lectures and leads classroom activities). The Director also works with teachers to help deliver several aspects of the curriculum as well. The Director also leads planning, preparation, organization, interactions with community partners, data analysis, outcomes assessment, and all other activities that extend throughout the year.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

SARE - 60%
  • The SARE Director must oversee partnership building with community partners (schools across the greater Baltimore area), facilitate student application submission, review, student interviews and student recruitment.
  • Work with various Hopkins offices to onboard scholars.
  • Develop, plan, and implement the academic curriculum (including writing, mathematics, science, bioethics, financial smarts training, mind wellness training, and professionalism development).
  • Responsible for delivering this curriculum to the students, either one-on-one, in small groups or as a whole class.
  • Recruit high school teachers to assist with some aspects of curriculum development and delivery, and works with the teachers to execute this aspect of their work. SARE recruits doctoral tutors to provide additional one-on-one tutoring, and recruits, organizes, and ensures successful tutoring experiences.
  • Recruit and develop the mentor team (PIs and in-lab research mentors).
  • Develop and implement mentor training and ensure strategic student lab placements.
  • Conduct biweekly reviews of scholars' performance during the summer.
  • Responsible for creating an environment of accountability for the SARE scholars. Over the course of the summer, collects data on student progress through the structured program. Then, conducts longitudinal outcomes assessments semi-annually. This data is essential for funders to understand and appreciate the impact their contribution is having.
  • Responsible for collecting, organizing, compiling and uploading necessary data for reporting to funders as well as publications.
  • Must seek and secure additional financial support for the CSM Initiative by partnering with Youth Works to help support the SARE scholars.


Laboratory - 30%
  • Oversees normal day-to-day operations of the laboratory which includes purchasing, lab reagent preparation and equipment maintenance.
  • Assists in research projects, including participating in data analysis and experiments and can serve as an author on scientific publications.


CSM - 10%
  • Provide a broader role for the over-arching CSM Initiative.
  • Provides support for the Doctoral Diversity Program (DDP), the post-baccalaureate portion of the CSM Initiative, serves as point for organizational and planning aspects of the DDP program.
  • Provides support for the planning, preparation, and execution of components of the CSM SIP (undergraduate portion of the CSM Initiative).
  • We are also seeking to expand the CSM to a multi-institutional effort and the person in this role will help implement this bigger vision.




Supervisory Responsibility
  • As SARE Director, oversees and work with ~17 high school students, ~17 in-lab mentors (one for each student), ~17 PIs, and ~5-8 tutors.
  • With regard to DDP and CSM SIP, helps oversee the progress and needs of ~7-10 DDP scholars and 14-16 CSM SIP scholars per year.
  • In total, direct and assist in the delivery of the activities for ~50 CSM scholars, including high school, undergraduate, and post-baccalaureate scholars, per year.




Budget Authority
  • As SARE program director, has access to a budget of ~$150-170K/year to manage under the guidance of Douglas Robinson.
  • This role oversees the entire CSM program, will have access to a total annual budget of ~$600-800K, which will be managed under the guidance of Dr. Douglas Robinson.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Education, Science Education, or related field.
  • 4 years of related experience preferably in science research, education, and/or science education of a department, center or unit.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
