The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School seeks the inaugural Associate Director for Research Development and Data Support to launch the Data and Impact Hub. The Data and Impact Hub will provide open access to Penn Carey Law data and scholarship. The hub will support the full empirical research cycle - helping law faculty develop and administer studies, supporting data analysis, spotlighting and preserving research output, and increasing the ongoing impact and reach of Penn Carey Law scholarship.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Biddle Law Library, the Associate Director will be the primary architect of empirical research and data support for the world-class Penn Carey Law faculty, who are engaged in cutting-edge legal scholarship on a global scale. The Associate Director will also partner with Penn Carey Law centers and departments to support their data needs and research projects. The ideal candidate will combine a background in quantitative analysis, social science/research design, and data science with strong project management and supervisory skills.

Position requirements include data management/organization, project management, basic database development and maintenance, ability to provide hands-on support for faculty empirical work, and ability to develop and supervise a pool of consultants. The consultants will have specific skill sets and will support active research projects based on faculty and project needs. Some examples of these outsourced skill sets are data cleaning, interviewing, survey design, text analysis, scraping web data, data visualization, data analysis, advanced database development and maintenance, and coding.

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

Leadership and Project Management
  • Short- and long-range planning for the hub's launch, including identification of prioritization of new and existing projects
  • Identify current demand and needs, distribute workflow, and project future needs and opportunities to support research and scholarship in the law school
  • Develop policies and procedures
  • Create robust documentation of processes and decision-making within and across projects
  • Coordinate with library to ensure that the data collected by the faculty are appropriately archived and described
  • Build and leverage relationships with law faculty and other data services across campus

Coordinate and Perform Empirical Research and Data Support
  • Assist faculty with complex research initiatives involving the formulation and execution of research aims, study design, and data collection/analysis plans; descriptive and advanced statistical analysis; the use of statistical software programs and online survey platforms; and data interpretation
  • Locate and connect faculty with existing data sources
  • Partner with law school centers and departments to support their data needs and research projects
  • Ensure that external and internal regulations and policies governing research and data management are met, including regulations concerning ethics, security, auditability, replicability, and privacy
  • Manage and organize data
  • Build and maintain basic databases

Hiring and Supervision
  • Recruit, supervise, and direct the performance of one or more student research assistants
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee work of consultants engaged for specific skill sets and projects

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Master's (or equivalent) degree in statistics, computer science, data science, or a social science discipline that requires advanced quantitative methods coursework (e.g., economics, political science, psychology, sociology); 2-3 years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong data management skills
  • Database building and maintenance experience
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Demonstrated success in project management and organization
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience hiring, supervising, and evaluating staff

Preferred:
  • Ph.D. in statistics, computer science, data science, or a social science discipline that requires advanced quantitative methods coursework
  • Prior data or research experience in a Graduate or higher education environment
  • Demonstrated experience conducting quantitative social scientific research
  • Ability to communicate research findings and processes non-expert audiences
  • Ability to support qualitative research needs
  • Demonstrated experience in extracting text from a variety of sources for analysis and use in quantitative analysis
  • Demonstrated experience collecting, cleaning, and manipulating large-N structured and unstructured data
  • Experience teaching research methods or managing research assistants

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
