Position Summary

The ideal candidate will be primarily responsible for creating, implementing, and managing strategic initiatives, serving as a primary resource to the three recruitment teams (instate, outstate, and international) managing, coordinating and strategically evaluating the specific functional operations in order to achieve success in application development, release of admission decisions and yield development. The senior associate will serve as a resource for all parties who request/create recruitment relationships within the respective colleges. The senior associate will represent Michigan State University and the Office of Admissions at the state, regional and national levels. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and presides over the office’s day-to-day operations for recruitment while working jointly with IT, Marketing & Communications, Processing, and the Budget/HR team to create a cohesive management team. In addition, the Senior Associate/S is responsible for maintaining compliance by analyzing data, creating strategic plans, and preparing reports as necessary and regularly auditing recruitment procedures, practices, documents, and operations to best meet the goals of our recruitment cohort.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Major responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Strategy Setting
  • Works as part of Office of Admissions management team to develop, recommend, and implement annual and multi-year strategic plans for undergraduate admissions
  • Works as part of Office of Admissions management team to adjust or modify the strategy or targets based on in-cycle outcomes
  • Utilizes demographic information, historic enrollment trends, market forecasting, and prospect data in order to develop and implement recruitment strategies and plans for targeted out-of-state recruiting
  • Develops and establishes performance metrics and target goals for all admissions counselors and other Office of Admissions personnel with responsibilities for impact on recruiting
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director to manage the recruitment goals and budget targets.
  • Creates, implements, and manages strategic initiatives in order to attract and enroll students based on their lived experiences and those of the university.
  • Develops and recommends policies and procedures relative to meeting admissions targets.
  • Sits on prescribed committees to support the holistic approach to enrollment management.
  • Admissions Management
  • Plans and directs admissions activities for undergraduate admissions
  • Directs the planning and implementation of counselor orientation, training, and development programs
  • Leverages data to evaluate effectiveness of the associate and assistant directors, and geographic assignments, programs, engagement, and conversions of admitted students
  • Evaluates and as needed, modifies regions/territories, responsibilities, and activities to improve overall effectiveness with support and input from the Associate Directors
  • Supervises and evaluates the day-to-day work of recruitment team
    • Student Recruitment & Admissions
    • Travels to visit secondary schools and community colleges in order to build relationships with school officials, counselors, and students to develop enrollment pipelines from these institutions
    • Interviews and counsels’ prospective students and their parents in order to ascertain their qualifications and provide admission guideline information
    • Counsels and provides guidance to students exploring various educational plans or courses of study
    • Reviews applications for admission in order to determine eligibility for acceptance to the university
    • Responds on behalf of the Office of Admissions involving inquiries and resolution of customer service-related items

    • University Relations
    • Serves on special admissions and scholarship committees
    • Represents the Office of Admissions in the absence of the Executive Director or Associate Director(s)
    • Coordinates with key university offices having admissions-related interests such as the Alumni Association, University Development, and Athletics
    • Liaises with MSU colleges with specific enrollment goals or activities (Honors, etc.) to align domestic out-of-state recruiting and admissions activities
    • Serves as a resource for university administrators and representatives, students, parents, external organizations/agencies/individuals, and other educational institutions.

    Communication / Interpersonal Relationships

    • Current and Prospective Student/Parents – to answer questions and provide information about the university and the admissions process
    • Admissions Staff – to exchange information regarding admissions activities and provide work direction
    • Admissions Associate Directors – to provide work direction
    • Academic Departments / Secondary Schools / Colleges / Universities / External Constituencies, Organizations and Agencies – to answer questions and provide information
    • Alumni / Development / Athletics/Other Departments/University Administrators - to act as a liaison in coordinating admissions activities and information
    • University Officials – to act as a liaison and provide recommendations on admissions initiatives and policies

    Impact on Programs / Services / Operations

    Effective policy development, strategic planning and direction of undergraduate admissions activities should have a positive impact on the Office of Admissions’ ability to meet its objectives. Additionally, the position may be the first and only interface prospective students have with the university. The recruitment and admission of students affects the financial base of the university and its academic reputation.

    Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in professional admissions work at a regionally accredited institution, including planning and implementing admissions programs, developing and implementing marketing and recruitment plans and strategies, researching and analyzing admissions data: professional experience in a specialized admissions area; making formal presentations; and working with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Desired Qualifications

    An advanced degree in a related field; progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a higher education environment with strong experiences in college admissions including international admissions. A strong attention to detail; effective organization, time management, and project management skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; current knowledge of higher education regulations and proficiency with SLATE.

    • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people; ability to conduct difficult conversations
    • Demonstrated ability to use a CRM and or other prospect/funnel management technology
    • Demonstrated ability to utilize data to inform strategic and management decisions

    Additional Requirements

    1. Valid vehicle operator’s license is required.
    2. This position requires or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period, knowledge of personal computer terminology, intermediate skills in presentation software, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
    3. The ability and willingness to travel regularly, with occasional evening, weekend and overnight assignments as needed.

    Experience in financial aid work at a regionally accredited institution, including researching and analyzing financial aid data, professional experience with Federal, State and University regulations, establishing relationships with University Officials and financial aid associations, experience with planning and developing related to short and long-term process improvement; professional experience in making formal presentations and representing the Office of Admissions on a national/international level.
