The Head Coach provides leadership and direction to all facets of the program in advancing the mission of the University and the Department of Athletics. Specific areas of responsibility include (but are not limited to) teaching, tutoring, instructing or lecturing Student Athletes and other members of the Lehigh University Coaching staff. This position also includes recruitment, Student-Athlete development (including academic support), program administration and program advancement yielding agreed upon results. All activities shall be conducted within the policies and resource framework of the University, the Athletics Department, The Patriot League and the NCAA. 1. Teaching, tutoring, instructing or lecturing
*Instructing student athletes in the fundamental skills, rules, strategies and physical conditioning necessary for success in their sport
*Instructing physical health, team concepts and safety
*Instructing and demonstrating techniques and skills
*Evaluating and assessing, effectiveness and results and adapting and refining strategies
*Planning practices, training sessions, team and individual conditioning, line-ups and competitive strategies
*Designing instructional programs for individual student-athletes or for the team as a whole as needed
*Establishing the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught all Assistant Coaches and other staff

2. Student-Athlete development
*Act as the lead in character development which includes counseling, teaching, instructing, advising, motivating, inspiring, disciplining and rewarding athletes as appropriate

3. Program administration
*Planning and evaluating student progress and program results, status and priorities
*Preparing and managing annual program budgets
*Supervising, managing and evaluating personnel (including sensitivity to diversity)
*Recommend hiring of Coaching Staff
*Scheduling student competitions and/or planning tournaments in coordination with appropriate administrator
*Complying with NCAA, league and institutional rules
*Attending staff and University meetings
*Responding to administrative and supervisory requests
*Utilizing technology to achieve efficiencies and productivity
*Proof recruiting or other media information
*Instructing Assistant Coaches on fundamentals and techniques of the sports

4. Recruiting
*Identifying and attracting prospects
*Evaluating prospects (athletically, commitment, character, etc.) through high school visits, at competitions and/or home visits
*Selecting prospective candidates
*Promoting Lehigh through communicating with prospects and families
*Coordinating recruitment strategies, calendar and procedures
*Yielding student prospects
*Valuing diversity in the process and results

5. Advancement and Results
*Promoting strong public, media and alumni relations (newsletters, fundraising support and/or Alumni games/gatherings)
*Promoting strong parent, community and professional relations
*Aspiring to professional development
*Fulfilling a commitment to teach and service in the Lehigh Community (Departmental, Institutional and professional)
*Achieving competitive success with the Conference (and sometimes beyond)
*Achieving academic success across the team
*Graduating student-athletes at a rate equal to or above the University rate
*Realizing personal growth and development in every Student-Athlete
*Promoting recognition of Student-Athletes

Special Considerations

The duties of the position do not allow for a remote work option; the employee in this position will be required to work on campus where they can be fully accessible to the Lehigh community

Variable shifts/schedule; often working nights and weekends

This position works with minors

Will often be required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to touch, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and lift up to 25 pounds

This position is considered Essential Services Staff; Essential Services Staff are required to report to campus and remain during inclement weather and other emergency situations; they are defined as those needed to deliver student services and maintain campus facilities, campus safety and security

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; Master's degree preferred

Five to eight years related work experience

NCAA Certification required; CPR/First Aid certification required

Experience as a student-athlete required

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to build, foster and maintain positive professional relationships

Solid writing ability, attention to detail and organizational skills

Solid computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database software

Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position

All Lehigh faculty and staff are required to be fully vaccinated and receive a booster shot six months after their second vaccine; unless they receive an approved medical or religious exemption from the requirement.
