The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a one‐year contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in the area of Comparative Slavic Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream beginning July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter, and ending on June 30, 2024.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Slavic Studies or a related field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. The candidate must show a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching Czech and another Slavic language and culture at the University level in a North American program. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate program level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellence pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching‐related scholarly activities. Excellent (native or near-native) knowledge of Czech and another Slavic language, in addition to English is required. The successful candidate must also have knowledge of current teaching methodologies, culture‐based instruction, and use of technology.

We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing program strengths. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in language, literature and culture (both in the original and in translation). In addition, the candidate will be expected to organize extracurricular events in Czech and another Slavic language.

Excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.


Salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
