The Biology Department in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics at Eastern Washington University (EWU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with expertise in Zoology / Wildlife Biology to begin in September 2023.

We are seeking broadly trained candidates who complement the strengths of our existing faculty and who will be inspirational teachers, researchers, and mentors. Candidates must show a high degree of interest in human and cultural diversity with a demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach to teaching and scholarship that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public. The department has a strong commitment to environmental justice and particularly welcomes candidates who would contribute to our shared tradition of close collaboration with local tribal agencies on wildlife and environmental monitoring and restoration projects. The department also plays a leading role in a campus initiative to restore over 130 acres of campus-adjacent wheat fields to native grasslands.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and to the development of a strong externally funded research program involving undergraduates and MS-level graduate students. Teaching responsibilities will include an upper-division course in Vertebrate Zoology and may include courses such as Mammalogy, Ornithology, Herpetology, Fish and Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, and a Senior Capstone course in the successful candidate’s field of specialty. All Biology faculty members are also expected to contribute to the introductory biology series and to actively participate in curriculum development and assessment of student learning. Although any research focus will be considered, the successful applicant’s research program should include a field component and should be amenable to engaging undergraduates in meaningful research experiences. Candidates whose research complements interests of existing faculty and provides opportunities for collaboration and partnership with local tribes and management agencies are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Biology Department has 19 tenure-track faculty and roughly 400 undergraduate majors. Facilities include teaching labs in a newly constructed 100,000 square foot teaching laboratory building and a field station at the nearby Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. The department’s main building is in the middle of a complete renovation that will be completed in 2024. In addition to individual faculty labs, the renovated facility will include a vivarium, herbarium, research greenhouse, teaching greenhouse, aquatics facility, and shared molecular biology lab.
