Description of Work:

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Art & Art History is seeking a candidate for a Tenure-Track position in Illustration. The successful candidate is well-versed in historical and contemporary illustration trends, with an active commercial illustration practice and research agenda. They foster a positive learning environment by developing curriculum and strategies that prepare our large and diverse cohort of undergraduate students for careers in the illustration industry. We also seek candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.
Courses taught could include beginning through upper level and capstone level undergraduate courses. Course content could include narrative illustration, commercial illustration, concept art and/or character design in both traditional and digital media.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

● Required terminal degree in illustration or a related field must be complete or verified by date of
appointment.
● Candidates must provide evidence of peer-reviewed research that emphasizes a commercial
illustration practice. This includes client-based/contract work, published credentials, industry
recognition or awards.
● Demonstrable proficiency in traditional illustration media and application
● Demonstrable proficiency in Illustration and Sequential Art using digital media, and the ability to
adapt to new media and technologies.
● Ability and willingness to contribute to the diversity initiatives (outlined in the College Strategic
Plan and in the UNC Charlotte mission statement). We also value a willingness to work
collaboratively.
● Preferred: Proficiency in programs that could include Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and/or
Procreate (Digital Drawing and Painting Software)
● Preferred: Undergraduate-level teaching experience in illustration, studio art and/or digital media
courses.
● Additional knowledge or experience of 2D animation production, interactivity, 3D programs such
as Maya, ZBrush, and Blender is not required but also welcome.
