Position Summary

The University of Denver’s Morgridge College of Education (MCE) invites applications for a colleague to join the DU Higher Education (DUHigherEd) Department. This announcement is for a tenure-track assistant professor position. We invite candidates with knowledge and understanding of higher education and its implications across the P-20 educational spectrum. We seek equity-focused candidates with critical quantitative and/or policy-focused research and teaching interests. Top candidates will focus on one or more of the following: historically marginalized identities - including Black, Indigenous, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, among others; broad access institutions; community colleges; minority-serving institutions; faculty and/or students who these institutions serve. This position requires an innovative and critical thinker who values our commitments to serving the public good and can work within a dynamic, inclusive environment.

Responsibilities for all tenure-track faculty members in the DUHigherEd Department include teaching graduate-level courses, advising graduate students, directing and serving on dissertation committees, maintaining an active research agenda, supporting the administration of academic programs in higher education, and other duties as assigned by the College leadership. The ideal candidate demonstrates experience and versatility in inclusive pedagogy and has a research agenda focusing on critical policy, critical quantitative methods, or critical mixed methods. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their teaching, research, and service.

Essential Functions

The University, through its faculty, engages in various professional functions, such as teaching, scholarly research and/or creative activity, shared governance, and professional/public service. A successful assistant professor should be able to:

  • Work independently and collaboratively with the intent to foster a collegial environment.
  • Interact with diverse communities, including utilizing inclusive teaching methods and/or pedagogies, to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.
  • Teach graduate-level theory and praxis-based classes.
  • Advise graduate students and mentor student research and doctoral theses.
  • Perform meaningful institutional service to the program, college, and university, as well as professional service to local, national, and international communities.
  • Engage in and sustain a scholarly agenda that values the teacher/scholar model. This includes but is not limited to publishing in peer-reviewed journals, open-accessed journals, and/or public scholarship.
  • Seek external funding.
  • Participate in department, college, and university governance.
  • Maintain and grow the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Service – Ability to provide service to the department, college/university, and profession.
  • Research/Creative Activity – Ability to contribute knowledge informing higher education practice, policy, and/or future research.
  • Demonstrate an expertise in critical quantitative methods or mixed methods.
  • Demonstrate a creative and enthusiastic commitment to social justice and advancing higher education’s public purposes.
  • Demonstrate a scholarly agenda grounded in equity and the study of higher education organizations and systems with the ability to inform and influence current higher education policy, practice, and research.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in Higher Education, Educational Leadership, or a closely related field by August 2023.
  • Demonstrate an expertise in critical quantitative methods or mixed methods.
  • Teaching - Ability to teach courses in higher education administration content areas at the master’s and doctoral (EdD and PhD) level; mentor and advise doctoral students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of (or demonstrate potential) inclusive teaching approaches (e.g., syllabi, teaching statements, teaching assistant experience, course evaluations)
  • Evidence of (or demonstrate potential) scholarly activity (e.g., published articles, book chapters, extramural funding, and/or professional conference presentations).
  • Expertise in higher education systems and critical policy.

Work Schedule

Full-time; 9-month contract with potential doctoral advising over summer months

Compensation & Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is 76,000-85,000. The University of Denver offers excellent benefits, including medical, dental, retirement, paid time off, tuition benefit, and ECO pass.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
