Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Advising & Student Success for the School of Public Health & Health Sciences (SPHHS), this position provides comprehensive advising for SPHHS exploratory students; implements and coordinates programs and services to promote the academic success of undergraduate at-risk students; works closely with departmental advisors and undergraduate program directors with particular emphasis on first-year and at-risk students; teaches multiple one-credit seminars and is responsive to the needs of a large number of highly diverse students.

Essential Functions

  • Advise and Counsel:
  • Advise diverse incoming (first-year and transfer) students in a fast-paced, high volume, small group advising format during New Student Orientation Programs held during the summer, fall and winter.
  • Advise at-risk students (as defined by each program), especially those on suspension or probation, with an aim to increase retention of these students. Review records of students in academic jeopardy, develop an action plan as needed and make recommendations regarding reinstatement. Recommend a student success strategy for at risk students, execute and manage assessment activities; prepare and report findings.
  • Advise all other SPHHS students, including exploratory track and those with complex matters that involve goal-setting, planning and decision making, on matters such as course registration, developing an academic plan, fulfilling university general education requirements, interpreting major and school requirements and declaring a major.
  • Provide advising services to undergraduate students during peak times by supporting departmental needs and programs (Majors Fair, Undergraduate Advising Blogs, student panels, etc.).
  • Liaison:
  • To community colleges within the state to provide information regarding SPHHS programs and to facilitate the transfer process.
  • To campus departments, at-risk advisors and other exploratory track advisors to keep up-to-date with various policy/procedural changes relevant to advising and campus-wide initiatives affecting student services and advising and to provide training and support when necessary.
  • To support services departments such as Mental Health, Disability Services, Learning Resources Center, Registrar, etc. to be able to refer students appropriately.
  • Instruction:
  • Teach multiple one-credit seminars and workshop on topics including, but not limited to: adjustment to college, student success, goal setting, decision making process related to choosing a major, first year seminar affiliated with Residential Academic Program, how to be an academic peer-mentor and others to be determined based upon needs.
  • Administrative:
  • Co-coordinate and implement events and activities such Open House and New Student Orientation.
  • Other Functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrate capacity, skill and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
  • Works collaboratively with other campus stakeholders to fulfill the mission of Student Affairs and Campus Life.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the Academic Advising or student services.
  • Ability to work independently, self-directed, organized, goal oriented, high level of initiative, creativity and motivation.
  • Ability to work with confidential material and maintain student confidentiality at all times and to manage multiple, complex tasks within short time frames.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite and database systems.
  • Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Sociology, counseling, education, psychology, higher education, student affairs or related field.
  • One (1) year in the Academic Advising or student services.
  • Experience with SPIRE and EAB- Student Success Collaboration (SSC).

    • Typical office environment activity.

    Work Schedule

    • Monday - Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
    • Occasional nights and weekends required.
    • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
