JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut, Information Technology Services (ITS), is seeking a technical and self-motivated Network Construction Administrator 1 or 2. This position will join the team that maintains the University’s voice, video, data, and wireless cable plant. Under the direction of the Physical Infrastructure and Planning group’s Team Lead, this position is responsible for the facilitation of IT projects and service activations for all departments within the University. Additional responsibilities also include procurement and management of contractors and documentation of the University’s IT-structured cable systems. This technical, service-oriented position is based at the Storrs campus in support of construction projects and operational services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform site surveys to assess needs for network and related IT-structured cable systems or service requests. Surveys may require carrying materials and climbing ladders to investigate pathways and details.
  • Accountable for the coordination of daily activities, delivery, and installation of network infrastructure and services to meet ad hoc requests, minor building, and utility renovations and installations.
  • Coordinates the work and activities of assigned staff, team members, subject matter experts, contractors, and vendors as related to ad hoc requests and minor renovation projects.
  • Maintain and verify the accuracy of documentation and administrative systems, quality control, and code inspections.
  • Train and engage student technicians and contracted resources in the collection and updating of network infrastructure documentation systems.
  • Work with vendors and departmental contacts to schedule and coordinate cabling activities.
  • Maintain mark-outs for the University’s IT outside plant infrastructure as it pertains to CBYD (Call Before You Dig) requests.
  • Conduct testing of the University's emergency blue phone system and coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information in compliance with University Information Security Policies.
  • Work independently with guidance from a supervisor.
  • The ability to work off hours and weekends when necessary.
  • Travel to multiple work locations throughout the state.
  • Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with two years of related experience in the design, planning, estimation, specification, and management of telecommunication network/information technology infrastructure OR Four years of experience in telecommunications infrastructure design, installation, testing, and commissioning with two years of related experience in the design, planning, estimation, specification, and management of telecommunication network/information technology infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated knowledge to document as-builts, infrastructure, specifications, and statements of work for daily activities or minor project requests.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing voice, video, and data cable installations as they pertain to end-user operational needs or small project requests.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of productivity software such as Microsoft Office to generate accurate statements of work, material lists, and summary reports.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent troubleshooting skills and the ability to interpret end-user needs and act quickly on them.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate well with people and work with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Network Construction Administrator 2

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with four years of related experience in the design, planning, estimation, specification, and management of telecommunication network/information technology infrastructure OR Four years of experience in telecommunications infrastructure installation, testing, and commissioning with four years of related experience in the design, planning, estimation, specification, and management of telecommunication network/information technology infrastructure.
  • Project and construction management for large, complex capital projects including the interpretation and use of building codes and industry standards.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing voice, video, and data cable installations as they pertain to medium to large renovation and capital projects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience with planning, generating, editing, and organizing drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with and use of IT help desk/trouble tickets systems such as Jira Service Desk.
  • Have and maintain a current CT electrical trade license such as an E, C, T, or TLT.
  • Job experience working in a higher education environment or for a university institution.
  • Familiarity/knowledge of the UConn, Storrs Campus buildings, and locations.

Additional Preferred Qualifications for Network Construction Administrator 2

  • Review blueprints and specifications as they pertain to building construction/renovation projects and provide comments to the design team.
  • Certifications and/or credentials issued by Building Industries Consulting International (BICSI).
  • Knowledge of UConn and/or State of CT procurement procedures and regulations.
  • Experience with project cost estimation and contractor oversight.
APPOINTMENT TERMS

Starting salary for this position will be commensurate with training and experience. The salary range for Network Construction Administrator 1 is $61,302 to $79,963. The salary range for Network Construction Administrator 2 is $76,897 to $99,966. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
