Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267 acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. Merced, incorporated in 1889, offers historical sites, affordable housing, access to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and is the Gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra mountains as well as home to the University of California Merced campus. This is a full-time, instructional assignment in the RN, LVN and CNA nursing programs at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Allied Health. This position is funded through categorical funds and is contingent on on-going funding. The assignment includes maintaining a nursing simulation laboratory and instruction in skills lab facility appropriate to current procedures and technologies within the industry. The instructor should be able to teach classes in the following subjects: Allied Health (ALLH-REGN-VOCN), simulation lab and basic skills lab. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening and weekend hours at the Merced Location.

    General Description:

    Under the direction of the Dean of Allied Health the successful candidate will provide classroom instruction within the nursing programs and within the nursing simulation lab, skills lab.

    Examples of Duties

    Representative Duties:

    Simulation:
  • Coordinate all simulation laboratory functions including classroom lectures, skills laboratory activities and student practice activities.
  • Assume responsibility and provide supervision of students in the simulation laboratory setting.
  • Develop critical thinking scenarios for use in the nursing simulation laboratory.
  • Promote problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the learning and practice of nursing skills.
  • Monitor equipment and supplies for replacement, repairs and disposal.
  • Order equipment and supplies for the simulation laboratory within allowed budget.
  • Ensure maintenance of an orderly, clean and organized simulation laboratory.
  • Participate in faculty team meetings and in nursing program committees.
  • Assignment may be at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop or plan and implement simulated learning that meets the students' learning objectives.
  • Prepare and set up the simulated environment including moulage to maximize student learning.
  • Plan and publish schedules for simulation.
  • Coordinates maintenance of equipment and supplies in simulation lab.
  • Assist with sim/skills lab inventory.
  • Recommend creative solutions for simulations.
  • Collaborate and train with updated simulators.
  • Provide faculty with innovative simulations.
  • Other position related duties as assigned.

  • Skills lab:
  • Work with students on skills laboratory and student practice activities.
  • Assume responsibility and provide supervision of students in the skills laboratory setting.
  • Participate and/or develop scenarios for low and high-fidelity simulations in the nursing skills laboratory.
  • Monitor equipment and supplies for replacement, repairs and disposal.
  • Ensure maintenance of an orderly, clean and organized skills laboratory.
  • Develop skills stations, coordinate and evaluate skills testing.
  • Coordinates maintenance of equipment and supplies in the skills lab.
  • Assist with skills lab inventory.
  • Other position related duties as assigned.

  • Instructional responsibilities:
  • Prepare and improve classroom lectures for face-2-face or online instruction.
  • Develop critical thinking scenarios for the classroom.
  • Participate with faculty in development of course objectives, course daily plan, and evaluation of total curriculum and revision of program policies.
  • Maintain and file student records, grade reports and rosters.
  • Remain current in the assigned subject matter and techniques of effective instruction through recent clinical experience and/or professional development.
  • Communicate with dean, director, program chair, or semester coordinator, and team members regarding student concerns and issues and student progress as appropriate.
  • Plan, discuss, and implement areas for improvement with faculty and students.
  • Other position related duties as assigned.

  • Includes driving to various clinical locations as necessary.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Required:

    Education/Training/Experience:
  • Master's Degree in Nursing;
    OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing AND Master's Degree in Health Education or Health Science.
    OR
  • The equivalent
    OR

  • The minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher:
  • Master's or higher degree, which includes course work in nursing, education or administration. If degree is in something other than nursing, submit information verifying course work in nursing education.
  • Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing areas to which the faculty is assigned, that can be met by either one of the following (A or B) below:
  • (A) One (1) year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in a designated nursing area;
    OR
  • (B) One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrate clinical competency.
  • Completion of at least one (1) years' experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing. Hold and maintain a current California license as a Registered Nurse, by August 18, 2022.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

  • Desired:
    • Experience developing nursing lab simulations.
    • Experience with simulation software and running reports for faculty and reporting purposes.
    • Familiarity with skills lab processes and instruction.
    • Teaching experience in nursing classes.
    • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments
