Job Summary: The Communications Specialist I works under immediate supervision with a department or area to craft communications and develop and implement plans, activities and tactics to support the goals of a specific department and/or college/division and the University. Knows fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of communications and public relations. This position does not supervise others.

Additional Department Summary:The Multimedia Communications Specialist I in the Division of Strategic Communications is a vital part of telling the University’s story and promotes university programs internally and externally. Shoots, edits and produces video stories/packages, writes news releases, pitches articles and other public relations materials while building relationships with both sources across campus and members of news media. Takes photographs, designs basic digital graphics, creates UA News Center post, and assists with special projects when necessary. Requires a high degree of professionalism, organization, discretion and discernment.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and one (1) year experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, or communications; OR master's degree. Student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student-oriented experience will be considered. To be considered student experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends as needed.

Skills and Knowledge:Proficient in all aspects of video production (planning, storyboarding, video and sound recording, editing and producing tools, and creating video packages that help elevate the University’s storytelling tactics). Effective interpersonal communication, time-management, collaboration, and organization skills. Feature, news, and/or public relations writing and video skills. Basic photo editing skills. Comprehensive knowledge of current video equipment and current video software recognized as industry standards (Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Final Cut Pro 7, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, Soundtrack Pro, Motion). Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style, content management systems (WordPress, etc.), Microsoft Office Suite, news release distribution and monitoring systems, current and developing trends in media, communications, and video production, and fundamental practices and procedures of public relations.

Preferred Qualifications: Three (3) years of experience in video production or public relations in higher education.
